  • Advice on best way to fit this…

    Hi all

Trying to price a job but not sure of the best way to fit it…

The only space available is to cover over 3 large windows, with metal frames. The frames are not flush. The overall size is 5800mm x 860mm.

What would be my option for fitting here? the shop next door has attached a light box on the brick above and come over the windows too, but after looking at it for some time, I’m unsure how they have attached that at the bottom.

customer doesn’t want a light box, just a flat sign with raised letters.
would it be madness to start drilling these frames?
there also an automatic door sensor to contend with…

can see a picture below which might make it a bit clearer.

would appreciate any ideas on this for me.

i’d first get it in writing that they have permission from the landlord to drill the frames.

personally i’d go onto the brickwork above.

I agree with Hugh, I would fix to the brickwork above and leave the windows and frames well alone

i agree too with going into the walls. But the space above the windows is probably about 18 inches max, and this is completely unseen unless you are stood under it, as there is glass canape/veranda that slopes down over the shop entrance, completely masks it!

What about alu-trays and VHB tape. No drilling…and it gets an amazing grip.

i was thinking along the lines of VHB tape, but wasn’t sure if there was enough area to get a good grip! I’ll look into this now.

We tried to stick a sign up with vhb tape onto glass and it was a non starter ( I thought it would be) Glass can be very tricky to get a good grip onto.

Have they considered vinyl lettering straight onto the glass?

i think he would be reluctant to go for vinyl on the windows, since the first thing he said he wanted was chrome moulded letters. plus the words are long and would be cut up by the frame, unless i get round this design wise, but again this moves away from the original idea he has in his head.

i have attached a picture of the shop next door, they have attached the light box to the wall above, but this drops down about a foot over the window. they have riveted a piece of aluminum then to the box, and this is shaped around the window frames, but how and where this is then attached I’m not sure, it cant just be attached via the brick at the top can it?

looks like a heavy duty aluminium angle, guessing the sign then sits in this and is fixed to it, i can;t see how they fix to the window though, the top angle can be fitted into the lintel above the frame i guess,

what about having chrome stand off letters made up and then sticking those with vhb tape directly onto the glass, you could black out the window from the inside to give a neat finish inside and this would provide a nice background for the letters???

thanks to everyone who has commented on this one….

the overall width of the shop front is just short of 10 metres.

bare with me here but do you think a better/safer/more expensive option would be to have an aluminium angle attached across the top and down the sides, and the bottom angle fabricated so it is attached just to the side and from the top by some downward pieces? or am i talking and thinking a load of #@#? here?! and then folded ali panels pop riveted to this? any of this remotely feasible?!

pickling my head this one …

that seems like a good idea. although there would still be some movement along the bottom edge i would have thought?? maybe if the angle on the bottom edge was vhb taped to the metal frame?? not for any weight support but just to stop the frame moving in wind etc

I would go for the last option and sleep at nights also the top of the sign would line up with next doors sign
    all the best

did one like it last month and we drilled into the frame to make it look a tidier job – you would need to work a way around the door sensor unit though shown in the photo. don’t forget you will probably want to apply vinyl to the glass to hide the sign from inside too 🙂
