Advice on a large sign
Posted by Nick Monir on 26 July 2010 at 18:30We’ve been asked by a long standing customer to manufacture & install a sign, 15m x 5m. It’ll be fitted to a cladded building and will be about 30 – 35m from ground level!
Can anyone suggest a suitable material or method??

35 metres from ground? rather you than me mate… 😉
di-bond or Aluminium with tech screw (open threaded with metal & rubber washers) or pre-drill with 3mm pilot hole and use a wood tech screw. space them every 12-16 inches.
you will need rows of techs down the centre of the sheets also, "maybe" even two rows depending on the sheet size you are using.
if its possible, try start and end a sheet on one of the raised section of the cladding and the rest should follow suit. -

In order to access the fitting area, I would imagine you would require to cost the hire of a cherry picker or MEWP (mobile elevated work platform), if the ground is uneven then you would require an all terrain type. The ideal situation would be a flat hard standing area, then you would consider the hire /use of a sissor lift with a wide /long platfrom area, this would then accomdate the sign material /tools/manpower. In addition unless you have a "ticket" training to operate this type of platform you would also require to hire an operator. Sometimes the cost of hiring will include transport costs for delivery to site of MEWP/Scissor lift, sometimes it does not, so good idea to ask before hand. . Weather conditions also play a big part for theuse of this type of equipment , wind conditions in exposed areas can play havoc with your plans, so one eye to the long range forecast should be factored into planning. regards Graham Shand

30 – 35m from the ground!!!!
The FIRST thing you should do is check your insurance if your serious about fitting this, I know for a fact ours wouldn’t cover it.

A flex face or similar tensioned banner system would be worth a look at

Thanks guys,
Insurance will definately cover us. We had to change it recently for a contract and this job is within the max height. We’ve had to opt for two truck mounted cherry pickers not only for the height, but also the massive outreach involved. All of our guys have their IPAF certification but the problem we have here is the size of the baskets on the cherry pickers. They’re no bigger than an average cherry picker basket. If we were able to access the site from directly below then we could’ve brought in monsterous scissor lifts which would’ve had equally monsterous deck space.
So, basically we’ll need to erect a massive sign, miles up, from a basket no bigger than a shower tray! 😕
Going to have a look at flex face!

just to put things to perspective,
it would depend on how wide the building is and the viewing distance, as to what would be appropriate at that size and height, I haven’t come across a scissor lift that goes that high though.
and the way to fit would probably involve a crane and a cherry picker, rather than two cherry pickers.
