You will need to avoid the soft shadow and halo effects seen in your example if you wish to print and cut. The soft shadow and halo has no defined edge. However, doing away with these effects will lessen the impact of the design and will make it look much "flatter" doing away with the illusion of depth.

Keep the shadow and halo and print on to clear with a cut line 10% bigger than the ‘image’

    My tupence worth….

I’ve done that before Matt – But in practice the edge of the clear vinyl quickly becomes visible once it’s been on the vehicle for a while and picks up some discolouration at the edges.

Also – you can only do it if the vehicle itself is white

If you use good quality clear cast vinyl and laminate, then the edge should be hardly visible.
Also if the substrate is not white, the shadow can be faded to the the same colour, easy enough on base colours much more difficult though on metallic etc.

Only when freshly applied – give it a few months and the edges do show spoiling the illusion of the drop shadow. Believe me – I’ve tried it 😕
