  • Advice needed on purchasing a printer please?

First of all hi, I am new to the site and I am looking for some advice. I have been making signs and graphics for a year or so with my graphtec ce5000 but I want to move onto printing onto vinyl. I have about £3000 to spend but not sure how to use it. Do I buy a printer then cut out on the cutter I already have or can I get a print and cut machine. I would appreciate any help thanks.

If yo are wanting to print to vinyl for vehicles and external signage I don’t think £3000 will get anything suitable especially as you will need to laminate. Buying digital print through the trade is both easy and relatively cheap and providing you can supply them with files ready to go I would keep your money and buy your prints in.

How much would a cheap print and cut machine cost second hand if need be? Can I print on vinyl with an inkjet printer or would you say costs are to high? I would just buy a wide format printer but I dont want to if the costs are to high. The bulk of my work is no more than a meter square. I don’t mind having to laminate but I that gets me printing.

I think you would be looking at least 5-7k for a decent print and cut, then there is VAT to think about…

I’m afraid you can’t do this job on the cheap, I know, I tried and nearly came unstuck. So I invested the 10k required for a new Roland, and here I am still 18 months later…

If you only have 3k budget, then you would be better off saving some more money up, I promise you, it’s going to cost you more than that in mistakes in the first 6 months alone!

I can show you the bills to prove it 🙂

I recommend having a flutter on the horses instead, you stand a better chance. Sorry I sound very negative don’t I? I’m only going from my own experience, if I had known 2 years ago what I know now. I would have gotten where I am quicker and with bigger wad of cash in my pocket. Having said that, making mistakes is a great way to learn… but like the horses…. only bet if you can afford to lose it 😉

    Good Luck
