  • advice needed – old light box has trim missing

Posted by Aurbab Zafar on 7 December 2011 at 11:10

hi guys, i have an old lightbox which works fine but all four sides of the external trim/extrusion into which the panel fits are missing. my usual lightbox suppliers advised me their trims only fit their boxes. this box has been up for years and i cannot see any kind of reference to the manufacturer. it is a ‘standard’ type of lightbox measuring 3994mm x 493mm. can anyone help?

You may be able to convert the existing box to accommodate a flexiface panel instead of a rigid acrylic panel which might get around the problem.

Speak to a flexiface supplier to find out if this is feasible

up for years, no trim etc… sounds like it is lying exposed to the wind, rain and snow?

personally, i would offer an entire new light box.

as for the trim, if this is a patch up job then any aluminium angle trim will do.
over size it slightly too something like 35mm x 35mm "L-SHAPE" Angle.
rivet the bottom section on the full lengh, one side and along the top. slide in the panels.
if that wont work due to the type of box extrusion. then fit the bottom trim. sit the panels in place and then rivet on the top angle along the lengh.

if like i said, the box is lying wide open just now i wouldnt even look at the electrics side of things. dont get involved in something like this unless your a fully qualified electrician. there is only so far you should be willing to go to keep the customer happy. as i said, if he wants a fully operational sign then he should buy a new one.

phill, converting to a flexi isn’t an option because the client wants it flat 5mm opaque.

robert, the lightbox was covered by a dibond sign tray with 8" returns. the lightbox, without the trim and panels was underneath once the tray ws taken off.

i have tested it and it works 100%, all the tubes come on etc. it hasn’t been exposed. since taking the covering tray sign off, i have covered the exposed tray with plastic sheeting. will this L shape angle slot into the visioble groove? (pic attached, sorry about the quality)

this is my FIRST ‘old light-box with missing trim’ so i’m learning lol

PS: i have already asked for a quote for a 3994mm x 493mm so if the cost is the same/slightly over than the price of buying the panels and trim, i may go in with the ‘new box’ approach.

That looks like a Universal Aluminium lightbox.
Send them the photo and ask.

peter, thanks have just sent the email

the quote for a new box/electrics + 5mm panels comes in at 330 + VAT/carriage so the difference is significant. the 5mm opaque will probs cost approx £100 as I need that anyroad, so were talking approx £300 minus the cost of the trims (if i can get them on their own) which will leave us the difference between a new box or new trims only.

i’m hoping peter’s lead ^^ comes up trumps..

Robert has answered this ~I think……
easiest and most economical way of doing it.

    cheers

we have done this before when our "friends" who don`t like spending any money have wanted to use old stuff.

Thin alloy angle from our local metal stockist, i think the last bill was about £15 a 5-6metre length, Then just screws to the outside.

    Looks terrible admitted.

But when the customer doesn`t want to spend alot, we try to still get the job done within their budget.
