    Hi All,
I am in a bit of a fix.
I am the Whippet Sign Bloke!
I said i would help a friend out and stupidly i am fining it tough as i am in wide format print not sign-making and i understand sign-making is specialist!

There are 3 Large Pub signs, ancient gold vinyl on a old blue metal background and a plastic frame.
He wants the cheapest option. Basically i thought i could vinyl a solid color over, paint the frame and get some letters cut and apply, however the old vinyl will show through and it does not feel like it is going anywhere!

Basically painting the fame is not a problem, its just getting a nice color background so i can apply the contour cut letters, what can i do?
Its not a nice surface, a friend mentioned painting it, what sort of paint would you recommend?
    Help!
Many thanks for any advice in advance!
    Edward

For the old vinyl not to show through the new flood coat you will have to remove it and clean up any glue residue and get the board smooth.
Normally a bit of heat from heat gun will soften the old vinyl before scraping it off with a plastic razor blade. Once you have an edge lifted it may peel off or it may just break up in little bits. No alternative to a bit of elbow grease here and i think you will find most would charge for this by the hour rather than give a quote as its never definite how long or how hard it may be.
Once you have the vinyl off the a glue remover such as this
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/HG-Hagesan-Ltd-Sticker-Remover/dp/B000IU3VSA/ref=sr_1_77?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1330099311&sr=1-77
should clean off any left over gunk. Then a clean up with Iso-propanaol before flood coating.
As long as the painted metal surface is clean and smooth then covering with a vinyl should be fine.
If any blemishes or rough spots sand smooth first.
If abit of heat won’y help remove the old letters then a rub over with the sticker remover and leave for a while could help.
    hope that helps.

that looks like gold polyester vinyl to me. If it is sorry but it is a horror to remove! definitely remove it on a hourly rate. Goodluck

(?) (?) To me that first picture looks like gold size and Gold Leaf or Dutch gold (you can see through the pale yellow size to the blue underneath) which would mean a good sanding and base painting should sort it for vinyl.
