  • Advice for finishes for outdoor oak sign

Posted by Darrell Wootton on 6 February 2011 at 19:53

    Hi all,

I am about to engrave an small oak sign approx 600mm x 200mm and infill letters with paint for outdoor use. I have been reading up on the types of finishes for the sign i.e: danish oil, varnish etc.

Opinions seem to vary some like oil, others yacht varnish and some just don’t bother with a finish and just allow the sign to weather.

Does anyone have any advice or experience with this.

    Thanks in advance

    I would go for oil.
Yacht varnish will need re-coating every 18 months or so and if it cracks
or flakes in the mean time water will get in and discolor the wood.
With oil you’ll still have to re-oil it every year or so but it’s going to be
a lot easier than re-varnishing and the oil will penetrate the oak more than varnish.

Danish oil is good stuff, you could also use teak oil that is used for wooden garden furniture.

I did some engraved Sycamore signs a year or so ago and used Ronseal 5 year wood stain on them, black for the lettering and a woody colour of some sort for the rest and they look as good today as when they were done.

I’ve also done some that were varnished but I’ve not seen them so I don’t know how well they are doing, I’m about to do some more for them though so I’ll be asking how they have done.
