  • Additional Cutter – Budget £2.5K-£3K Advice???

Posted by Jason Davies on 24 February 2007 at 07:28

Morning, I have had a good search of the boards (probably missed it though) and have found some really useful links to cutters but as we all know prices seem to fluctuate on some products.
I am currently running a Roland Camm1 1210 and GerberGSX (along with and Edge) and need an additional cutter, I would prefer to spend £2500 as opposed to £3000 but want to make sure I choose the right machine.
I have been very impressed by my Roland which has served me well for the last 10years but now I am looking for a larger machine to take over some of the work we run.
Whichever cutter we use it has to be Mac compatible but that doesn’t seem to be to much of a problem these days.
I have been looking at the GX300 which will cut vinyl up to 737mm I was hoping to cut to at least 820mm so am a little disappointed with the Roland on that point.
I have no experience with any other cutters, but many people recommend Summa, Mimaki, Graphtec or Mutoh, I assume that these are as robust and reliable as the Roland.
Hoping to make the purchase next week.

Jason, have a quick search on the boards as a couple of people lately have asked about buying plotters, Graphtec, Summa and mimaki all got a mention. I am curious as to why you would want to cut up to 820mm wide though as this isn’t a standard vinyl width, is it for some specialist application? If I were looking to buy another machine I think I would be looking for a machine that would cut at 1220mm as this would cover just about anything and there doesn’t seem to be a great deal of difference in price.

all nice machines and i think only slight differences between them but your budget allows you almost to a larger machine that will cut 1370 material with a printing mark recognition system making your purchase a little more future proof.

I’m thinking of buying 1220mm rolls of vinyl and having the left over piece slit and sprocketed for the gerber. The Roland 1220 cutter works out with VAT at £3800 which is beyond our budget so any other recommendations or special offers/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I would look at the Summa S 75

I’ve had a Summa D610 (the 610 wide version of this machine) for nearly eleven years. It’s very robust and has been extremely reliable. I’d certainly buy another if the 610 was still available

Thanks, it does look a very nice machine,(SUMMA) I’ll phone around on Monday to check the prices, unfortunately 2995+VAT is just outside my budget.
