  • A3 Scanner (anyone use one?)

    Hi

As my old scanner doesn’t work with Windows 7, (10 years old) I am thinking of getting a new one. Looking into A3 but the prices for a decent make (epson) is from £1000 -£2000! Why don’t I get an A4 and stitch larger scans together 😀

Anyone have and use an A3 scanner?

Not me David. I’ve always managed fine with an A4.

Are you regularly doing something that needs A3?

Sometimes bigger than A4 and even bigger than A3 so have to scan this in 4 pieces and stitch. I will be able to manage with A4, if the cost hadn’t been that higher for A3 I would have just got one.
I have seen old SCSI models on ebay for £200, not sure whether to try one of those. I have a SCSI interface on a Windows XP machine that I use with my plotter.

Other option is to get in touch with a local architect as some have big scanners for inputting plans. £1-2K will get you a hell of a lot of scans. I had an A0 full colour done for £6…..

    Just a thought

our photocopier (and past copiers) are bigger then A3, normally okay although they more designed at removing the backround of white.

David, I’m about to invest in a Brother A3 scanner/fax/printer. Good value at $au499. Cheaper than epson or cannon, but just as good.

Cheers Graeme, nice idea. Have used older ones years ago to archive architectural plans. I am not entertaining spending £1000 though, the wife would kill me. £200-£300 and it’s nice having the equipment to hand, especially if you are working on a job late at night.

Thanks Shane, top idea. I hadn’t entertained the multi function devices as I had the jack of all trades master of none notion 😀 , how can they have all those functions for less than the price of a single function? After reading up though it looks spot on. £299 and I get an A3 printer into the bargain.

    Investigating further…

David, I’ve always had an A3 printer until recently. Whenever I print client proofs, I always did them in A3.

It looks much more impressive from a clients perspective.

A secondary consideration is that people can’t fax it or scan it in normal A4 scanners, so you are less likely to be shopped around

    Hi David,
I had the same trouble when I switched to xp I now use a Mustek A3 scanner, it cost £80 when I bought it quite a few years ago. Just had a look and they retail around about £130ish.

What a brilliant idea Shane 😉
