A shop sign in Wells gets noticed for all the wrong reasons

A shop sign in Wells has definitely caught residents’ attention – but for all the wrong reasons. The brightly coloured sign in question belongs to the Fone Care phone repairs shop in Sadler Street. Wells Civic Society raised concerns over the style of the sign back in November 2014 with Mendip District Council. Chairman of the society, Chris Winter, said: “The sign is not in keeping with the surrounding listed buildings or the conservation area, and is contrary to Mendip’s Shopfront Design Guide – December 2012.” After a follow-up email Ms Winter received a response from the enforcement officer Ian Glover, which said he had met with the shop’s owner who is based in London had agreed in principle to remove the fascia.
However, Shavaiz Mahmood, owner of Fone Care, said: “I’m confused as to what’s wrong with the sign, is it the colour, the design, where it is? “I have lots of phone shops all over the country and this is the first time we’ve had complaints over the signs.” “We are happy to change the sign but we are waiting for Mendip to get back to us with a style guide.” “I’m going to look to see if a sign writer can help in the next few weeks. At the end of the day we do not want to upset Wells residents as we are here to help not wind people up.”
Ms Winter added: “One of the society’s key aims is to maintain the integrity of the historic built environment of Wells and shop fronts like this do not contribute to this. “There are many examples in Wells of very well designed and well-kept shop fronts which add to the city’s appeal whilst still giving the retailer their unique branding.” The shop in Sadler Street had previously been a designer jewellery boutique before it changed hands last year. A Mendip spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the shop fascia on Sadler Street, Wells, and our planning enforcement team are currently looking into it. We are working with the property owner to secure a more suitable fascia for the shop front which will be in keeping with the surrounding conservation area.”
