  • 5mm Gloss fomex OK for site boards?

Hi guys, hope you are all well. Not been on here, or the rest of the Internet for a while, been trying to make a good start for 2007!

Anyway, I’m after your opinions or advice. Normally for site boards I cut up a sheet of white matt 10mm foam board, but this particular customer wants red site boards, & you can’t get coloured 10mm foam, so I was wondering would 5mm gloss be tough enough, or should I just flood coat some white 10mm? Alupanel is another option, but seems a bit expensive/low profit just for site boards.

The only trouble I can see with flood coating, is the vinyl lifting on the corners over time. Back in the day, we’d paint up some 12mm MDF, but I’m loathed to go down that route. What would you guys do?

    Cheers,

    Gwaredd.

I would flood coat 10mm, I always cut the vinyl in about 5mm from the edges, making it harder for the corners to lift.

I can’t see 5mm being a problem just not as robust as the 10mm and the colour will fade if left out for prolonged periods of time.

Whilst on the subject, an excellent product for site boards is Amari, Excell foamex, it has a hard shell like coating, I use loads of the stuff again only in white.

I would flood coat the 10mm foam but cut the red vinyl so to leave a 5mm white border around the edge of the board. This is what we do to stop the vinyl lifting from the edges.

    cheers

you could ink the 10mm board red. this can be sprayed or rolled.
10mm is enough for a budget site board being used once. but if it was continually being used ide do it in alluminium or at least alucolour or somthing.

5mm will burst as it gets brittle, the colour stability on red is VERY poor so it will be pink in a couple of months.
ide flood coat in vinyl but like you say, dog earing of the vinyl will occur over time as its a naff surface to flood coat.

the small cheap architect boards are done using a plastic called HIPs, its only 2mm thick has gloss surface and is very cheap. gets brittle like the rest but seems to bend much further before it will snap, "maybe thats just due to thickness, i dont know… i dont use it either but have in the past.

amari used to do a self coloured aluminium called signicolour. this is good stuff, comes in various colours manufactured by alcan using auto-paints so stability is there too.

Pyramid display (0161 872 5666) have a di-bond derivative that they call hoarding panel in 3mm at the right price. It only comes in white but you could cover in vinyl a wrap around the edges to prevent lifting. The beauty of this is no bowing/buckling.

When I make siteboards my customers always want ‘cheap as chips’! I offer them Corex, (as well as the other usuals) then if they leave them/lose them, it hasn’t cost them a fortune & they always come back for replacements.
10mm Corex (white only-I believe) is a new good seller, and not much more than 5mm.
