Hey guys, I’m new on here & just thought i’d post up a few signs…

    I’m a 3rd year apprentice from Australia…

This first one is 23k water guilded (on the back)

The scroll down the bottom is an imitation gold vinyl…

The border is glue chipped which is quite an interesting method…

The mould below cut out of MDF & carved a bit…

The lettering was CNC routered but all the rest was done by hand using bandsaw, dremel, files & most importantly elbow grease…

I hope you guys like it…

Great work Daniel, it’s always good to see more traditional artwork on the site.

How long is your apprenticeship over there and is it all college based or are you with an employer?

Keep ’em coming………..in all my years I’ve never glue chipped……must get some glass in and have a go.

    Thanks Neil!

Our apprenticeships are 3 – 4 years depending on what your employer wants…

In my case I got a 3 year because I had been working with them for 2 years already…

I basically work 4 – 6 weeks then go to college for a week block.

You should really try some glue chipping! It’s quite easy and you get such a great effect from it!

My boss is very traditional, we signwrite a majority of our signs so i’ve been getting the old style skills built up!

I’m only 20 now so hopefully if I keep at it I can keep the art alive!

If you are only 20 now I can’t imagine how good you will be at 40.
Nice to see the younger set having an appreciation for and a hunger to learn traditional sign arts.
    Love….Jill

    Thanks Jill, Harry and Peter!

I’m going to keep at the traditional while also keeping up with Technology which is going so fast!

I’m interested in seeing some more traditional artwork, the traditional side of this forum doesn’t seem to move very quickly lol…

I see you do quite a bit of gilding Jill, is there quite a demand for this type of work in your area?

The main gold work we still do is honour boards and small stuff like that…
People are even sticking honour boards nowdays! 😮 (:)

Really nice signs Daniel. Especially the glass sign. How did you make that blue kind background? It looks cool

    really liked the apexi sign

out of interest – was the green thumb just an exercise – or a job from the other side of the world?

Lars – I haven’t done the background yet, that is just a DP vinyl on the back to imitate what it WILL look like…
The Australian Sign & Graphic Association are coming to our training campus to have a look at the apprentices work & campus…I’m hoping one of my projects makes the magazine especially the gold leaf one 😛

    Micky D – thanks!
The Apexi one was my first project all the way back in first year! Lots of sanding involved ah!
The green thumb one was just an exercise, we had to create a cafe or pub so I thought what the hell. that sign is all stippled enamel blends in reverse on the back.

I stink at gilding. Luckily everyone thinks it’s real expensive, so I rarely have to do it!
    Usually people just want SignGold.
I have seen some of those gilded honours boards over there, simply astounding.

Thanks Glenn, stay tuned for more hehe! I will definatly post pics of future work!

Jill, I was trying to find pics of some of the gilded honour boards my boss has done… I may be able to later!
They’re amazing, you can see time go by as a different signwriter takes over the job, the style of writing differs or the colour of the gold varies…
But that just adds to the authenticity of it all! some honour boards go back decades!

I would like to see some of your gilding if you have any pics Jill, you may say you stink but at least you get your brush wet & pull out the book!

I do stink at it. I always flood the gold.
I am having better luck using slow size but not much better.
There are some examples on my website, just click the button that says www at the bottom of this post.
Don’t want to hog your thread.

I think doing honours boards would be tedious yet fun if I could get it right. I am sure you’d have to put a few drops of paint in your sizing so you could see what you were doing!

Yeh you can drop a few drops of light yellow into your sizing, that will surely help lol.

It is definatly tedious work, I can’t say i’ve done honour boards before, I know when my boss does them the are worth $40aud ($27.7us) a line…so that’ll get you a name & date

I’ll check out your website now Jill, didn’t see it down there before!

I’m hopefully handwriting a banner next week so I’ll post it up, it’s just simple text but worth a post i suppose 😛
