  • Installing graphics onto new paint-new graphics-clear coat

Hi all. Im doing some work on a tractor and the customer is throwing curve balls at me increasing the risk for no real reason.

So im installing graphics onto the side engine panels, rear fender and roof. Its stripped down at the moment and in the paint shop. Ive already told him to wait a minimum of 3 weeks until i come and do the job. Today they called and now want me to install the graphics between the new paint and clear coat. (i hope they dont think this will speed up the process as it still needs 3 weeks before the clear coat) Now i understand this can be done and it looks much better and will last much longer. However i see added risks involved, its my understanding that the process and skill of adding the clear coat is vital to ensuring the graphics dont react badly and also in the future its a nightmare removing the graphics if needed.

Whats your thoughts/experience with this situation?

    Absolute flat out no.

If that paint is not rock hard your going to possibly have an install issue with paint lifting or even coming off with app tape. Even after waiting 3 weeks I would be worried.

As for the clear coat on top I would also say no. One.. how do you remove the graphics in future? Two, if it does react, who is at fault, you for providing the graphics or the guy who did this clear coat stuff? Which am guessing is just a lacquer? And then how do you get the graphics off again? Or it’s it more like ceramic coating? In which case all the boys local to me don’t want to do it after we have done graphics and we can do it after they have done there job either.

Sounds like a nightmare. I turned away a van a few weeks ago that had drove and hour and a bit to get to us. The guy decided to re-spray part of it and in his words “grew arms and legs and I ended up doing the whole van yesterday”…. and he was dead keen for me to keep going. But I know as soon as there is an issue, we’ll be the ones sorting it, with the aggressive customer who will expect it for free.
