  • Design and Layout of signs and vehicles, how do you do it?

I have been doing this job a while now and I understand the issue with people pinching my artwork that has been given to them by customers price hunting.

I also know that we need to charge for our time when designing and upping our game, so to speak.
I think this is fine if the design is complex. But a general van design can be knocked together in 30 minutes. This has me thinking should we be applying a standard design fee on top?

I don’t know, I guess i am just looking for ideas from what others have tried or are doing before i pull the hair out of my head. 🤨😫

    thanks in advance 👍

    Right then –

First things first what is their budget. No point designing a wrap if they’ve only got £50, or a built up illuminated sign if they’ve only got £100.

Once you’ve a budget, you know what you’re playing with, and can show them some examples of what style they can expect.

They like what they see, they’ve given you a budget, next stop is getting some money. You can charge a %, or a fixed fee that covers the time. Put a limit on the number of revisions, alterations, and make the customer aware of costs after these expire. It will stop them coming back with 101 tiny revisions.

If they don’t want to pay, let them go elsewhere. I know @Hugh Potter does similar, or you can pop in for a 1-2-1 design session, but nothing leaves the building until paid for.

Make it more than just making a pretty picture for the customer though.

Regardless of how long it takes you, they’re not paying for your time, they’re paying for the knowledge and experience that allows you to do it so quickly.
