Cutting Vehicle Magnetic Roll into a circle. Advice please?
Posted by Stuart Miller on 26 March 2021 at 11:07I have only produced rectangular vehicle magnetics in the past and have a request for some 400mm circular ones.
Any ideas on how to cut a neat circle in the magnetic?

For short runs, we’ve cut them on our plotter before, using high pressure. Set the blade to cut about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through, then tear them out. They usually come out with a clean edge.

Thanks Jamie.
Wasn’t too sure if the plotter would take it, but I do have some heavier blades for thick security film so will try them.

ide be interested to see if the plotter can even move this stuff given its magnetic and would tend to stick to the bed.

I guess it depends on the plotter. Our Mimaki had plastic covers, and an aluminium bed, so no problem there. As David says, best done in sheets, due to the weight pulling on the roll.

We’ve cut them on our plotter in the past, and tore them out as Jamie said.
Don’t do it off the roll as it won’t like pulling the weight.
From memory I think we did it upside down then applied the graphics to the face. -
I have never done them in a vinyl cutter before, and good point on the weight thing David.
When you did it in reverse, then tore away from the roll. would that not leave the rough edge nearer the top/face of the print? -
From memory no, but we applied the print after with vinyl as the Seiko has a steel bed, so couldn’t print direct.
Not sure If our graphtec was steel too, which is why we turned it over so it didn’t stick when feeding.

cut the shape in vinyl and stick it to the magnetic and then cut the magnetic using sharp scissors. 🤓

Thanks for the replies guys.
It encouraged me to try the plotter and it seems to work fine, as advised though only use the size needed as a roll will be too heavy.
cheers
