Ashbys Trade Supplies, poor quality or is it just me?
Happy New Year everyone, I hope we all had a good Christmas and am looking forward to a good 2020.
I ordered some ACM panles from Ashbys prior to Christmas and took delivery. The installation is due on Friday. When I took delivery things seemed okay but I hadn’t really had a good look. My issues is that I have now realised that where they have reinforced the pans with pieces of angle this now leaves a gap between the pan edge and the angle that will be fitted to the wall ( see photos) so much so that when I try to fix the pan to the angle it will bend the ACM.
On the smaller panels there are only corner supports, which is fine but the angle is longer than the gap between them so still leaves a gap.
I know I can cut the angle to fit but do these people not think of these things.Has anyone else had these issues and did you have any joy with Ashbys when complaining?

I see the problem… a supplier we use puts reinforcement along the edge but not that thick.
Could you not mark where the angle is, and put fixings through there?

Maybe the supports for the smaller sign are not for the sides. They may not require supports due to it being shallow in-depth?
With the larger one. I would agree with David, mark where the supports are using bits of masking tape and try avoiding.
Granted this doesn’t make fitting the pan easy as you have to compensate for it when putting the brackets in place first.When we do pans, we actually construct the frame in one aluminium frame. screw that to the wall and slip the pan over it. makes a quick easy to install on-site and prevents getting fixings inaccurate, because as you say, if it doesn’t line up the pan will pinch-in when making your fixings.

I have decided to cut down the angle to fit between all the support piece. on the smaller signs this is fine but for the larger one it just means that it is now fiting to 3 smaller angle across the top and bottom instead of one long piece. None of this is going at high level sono to concerned. In fact the largest piece at 2000 x 600 is going on a low wall ourside the main entrance at only 200mm off the ground.
I will drop Ashbys an email in the new year just to point out my concerns and hopefully they will make some changes.
I must say I would normally use aluminium panels but as these are all low down and my client has had issues before with the theft of signs and equipment, they requested ACM. -
This is how we do our trays, it easier and quicker to make a frame in the workshop.
The job is a 10×5 with a 2” fold done using a small hand router with the proper 45º bit, it cost around €80 but has made hundreds of trays.
