  • Rules on Ltd company, when do you need to use ‘Ltd’

    Morning all

Does anyone know what the legality is for using ‘Ltd’?

i.e. Does it need to be put onto everything? I was under the impression it had to go onto letterheads, comp slips, invoice pads, basically anything you put in writing but does it need to go on to vans, websites, email signatures etc?

Not to sure as I thought you can trade as a company under a LTD. I can register Joe Bloggs Signs LTD and trade as JBloggs Signs.

    Hi Iain

Do you not have to then put ‘trading as jbloggs’?

All this confuses me and just had a client ask so thought I would check.

As long as you have an A4 sign up at the companies registered office, you are not obliged to put Ltd on anything else. You must obviously tell anyone when applying for any credit that you are limited.

It’s covered by the companies act 2006, which is full off waffle, but take a read here:

By not disclosing the fact you’re a limited company, you could be held personally liable for a debt.

Eg: you send a purchase order by email, go bust. The supplier could claim you were a sole trader as you didn’t disclose the limited company as you should be the companies act 2006. 😉

I was under the impression that official purchase orders and invoices are to show the correct trading style of the company. When I recieve orders from new companies, I always ask them their correct trading style straight away. It also helps me check them out before I do any work. Always know who you are dealing with as there are many crooks out there ready to rip you off if you are not careful
