  • Fitting contra vision to vehicle windows

Hi, i did some contra end of last year, internal unlaminated. No problems all gravy.

Ive not as yet done any vehicles and when asked ive mentioned its short term 2 yrs or so. Reason being i know its monomeric and ive seen issues with plenty of jobs. Im not willing to damage my reputation because people expect longer durability.

Anyway having spoke to a rep, they advised that when fitting onto vehicles make sure the laminate is wider than the contra, therefore it stops it from lifting. Wondered if anyone has used or heard of this method?

Im assuming you would print, cut, then lam and cut bleed onto backing paper. Sounds like a pain in the ass to me. Especially if your applying onto a vehicles window. Hows it possible without template etc.

    Hi Martyn
I laminate contravision and fit to the window and trim inside the window about 6-8mm then use a product called Wrapfix sticking it half on the glass and half on the print its about 10mm wide and clear, this removes any tension from the print and you seal the edges. If its a dark vehicle I sometimes use Mould ‘N’ Hold.
Just explain to your customer why you leave a gap first.
    I get both from Signgeer.

I also apply printed contavision. Then trim inside the glass edge 6-8mm. Then I apply 15mm strip of clear MD5 to seal the print. Did my car without the strip seal but is failing after two years and dust, snow, ice enters inside holes.

We always run a few mm of 3M primer all round the edge of the car window when using contravision
We have never had a problem of peeling back.

Thanks for your input guys, i will try all these options. Im doing an mot centre nxt week with external contra, windows are terrible. I think for extra protection im going to run a beed of clear silicone around the edge.

If it’s a flat glass job you could just use a laminated polymeric with uniform vertical or horizontal lines cut through it rather than contravision. Not much difference in appearance from a few feet away & internal visibility is better as the gaps are clear glass not laminate.

Thats an interesting idea, would definatly be more durable

Can also be done in reverse on the inside if you have access. You won’t be cursed by the window cleaner & you’ll get better lifespan.
