Not actually sign related, but I thought I should tap the collective genius that is UKSB for some advice on what I think may be a scam of some sort.

Last week I received a letter at home from a company called idrww.com who are international debt recovery specialists.

The letter advised me they were acting on behalf of Emirates NBD PJSC to recover a debt I owed this bank. The letter contained a phone number 01494 911099 that I was to call if I would prefer they contacted me by other means rather than my home address, given that this was a delicate matter.

Naturally I ignored the letter as I have never had any dealing with Emirates NBD PJSC bank and have never visited that country and I assumed this was a typical phishing scam of some sort (albeit by letter rather then email).

Today – 1 week later, I received another letter this time with more information about the nature of the alleged debt (Credit card) and the amount owed. Of course I do not recognise the credit card number and have no debts with this bank. Once again the letter stated I should call 01494 911099 if I believed I was not indebted on the account or if I felt the information they held was incorrect.

It seems they want me to call this number (01494 911099) for whatever reason?

I have googled idrww.com who appear to be legit, and their contact number is 01494 911090 – i.e the last digit differs from the number I am being asked to call in the letters I have received.

This is all very mysterious to me. I suspect it is a scam of some sort – or perhaps it is a case of mistaken identity.

Either way I’m not sure what to do next?

Any one have any idea what this is all about?

Maybe contact the FCA and see if they have had any dealings with this firm.

It does sound a little fishy.

If you don’t already, check your credit report. You can get it for free using someone like Noddle, it should show you any accounts & credit cards linked to you.

Or ring the number on their website, rather the number on the letter. It may be that they’re chasing a debt of someone with the same name, and are using the scattergun approach hoping the letter lands on the right door mat.

We still get letters at home (in fact got one today) chasing a debt from the previous owner.

Your find that the tel number is a UBER rate, charging £100 per minute, that’s how they makes the £££ 👿

Yea I would tread careful. We once took out an advert with a TV company that look legit. £4K later, no TVs and 6 months doing the line it appeared us and 170+ others had been taken for mugs. All looked above board though.. still remember the salesman’s names. He even came back a week later after we he first came in to “give us time to re-search and think about it, see if it’s right for your company”..

definately a scam, ive just searched the number you had been given and 700+ people had previously searched the number. Only a few comments but generally saying scam stay away. They are getting more clever though using legit names and slightly altering the number. Alot of people would not be so careful in checking.

Having discussed this with a few friends and relatives over the weekend, I had concluded it was possibly a case of mistaken identity. The company are legitimate and do specialise in tracking down and collecting debts owed by UK nationals who have defaulted on a debt owed whilst living abroad. My assumption was that they were contacting all people with my name (after all there can’t be that many – and it’s relatively easy to find out someones address by looking up the electoral roll or companies house). I therefore decided to phone the number after all (having first withheld my number). I explained who I was and that I was not the person they were looking for. This was accepted without question and I was given an apology and thanked for contacting them to put the record straight. I was also assured there would be no further correspondence from them. I also pointed out that there was a subtle spelling mistake in the way they had spelt my name (one L instead of two). They said this was significant and would help them with their further investigation.

So case closed.. or is it?…we shall see :awkward:
