  • Ink Spots – Mutoh UV Print Direct to Acrylic

    Hi Guys,

We’re printing with a Mutoh 1638UH UV Hybrid and having trouble with ink spots/lines dragging across the media (see attached image).

We think we have narrowed it down to static, but there are too many variables to solve, so wondered if anyone has suffered with a similar problem?

We have found that removal of the protective cover (Acrylic) and a wipe with application fluid and clean kitchen towel appears to remove the static and produce far less ink spots (if any).

This doesn’t feel like a very definitive solution, merely a workaround for now.

What do you guys think? Has anyone figured out what how to solve a similar issue?

I always wipe down acrylic with IPA and a microfibre cloth. While I don’t have a mutoh, I have a Roland LEF20, but yes, the static can be an issue when the protective film is removed.

So is it the IPA and cloth that is removing the static build-up from the material?

Yup, I know when I peel large sheets of acrylic, the static buildup is quite bad. (I primarily do laser cutting and engraving).

Also, I always spray to remove any potential residues of the protective film. Not sure if I just imagine it however…. but the bond seems better.

I don’t get the issue you describe, but I do (did) get spidering from the printing before it cures it.

    Thanks Phil,

We have also change the acrylic brand and that seems to make a lot of difference.
