Overlaps are fine, doesn’t matter how much you have of an overlap because you are pulling it back off to leave the paint.
Personally, if the graphics are large, i would use a minimum of 10mm overlap. it helps with alignment purposes and also helps keep the overlap flap down. by that i mean paint mask has a very low tack, a little 5mm overlap is bumping up one layer of vinyl onto the next. there for your only going to have something like 3mm of low tack adhesive holding the flap down. then your painting over that… for me ide use a minimum of 10-20mm.

also, once you have the layers in place. apply some heat with a heat gun along the flap to key it down. but more so use the edge of a nylon squeegee to promote adhesive right at the overlap join. hard to explain but you want the overlap to show the step being neat and tight closed.
If you do not get the join tight, the paint or ink will run into the step space and bleed its way along the space.

if you apply, lets say 10mm overlap. accurately measure and mark with a pen on the vinyl a line where 10mm is. its very easy to over or under lap tiles if you do not have registration marks.
