  • ink droplets on media whilst printing

Posted by Chris Ranner on 13 May 2017 at 08:31

    Hi all,
I’ve just started having a problem with my printer, see attachment for picture, ink is dropping onto the media and ruining almost every print.

I recently topped up the ink levels but no higher than usual, any ideas? I haven’t opened it up to check yet, but could it be the dampers have failed somehow and are just siphoning ink? The waste ink bottle isn’t overly full and the ink levels aren’t dropping significantly so it’s not like someones opened a tap.

    (Mutoh Rockhopper II)

Any ideas would be gratefully received!

Have you done a manual head clean around the heads?

Could be a collection of dust on the carriage. It looks like its smearing across the media not just dropping?

Looks like droplets as the head changes direction
Wiper poor. Pumps not working or more sinister would be a air leak around the damper
Possibly if third party inks over filled tanks

We had an engineer out to our old jv3 yesterday, for the pump.

He examined the head and noted all 3 heads were scratched, just on the coating as the print out was fine.

I asked what would be the problem because of that and he said the coating on the head helps keep it clean, a scratch could cause droplets

Bit of dust or hair could cause this as the ink gathers on it and then drops on the media usually either side of the roll when machine changes direction…

    Try replacing wiper(s)?

    Thanks for the ideas,
I’m going to pull some of the ink through to lower the tanks and see if that helps things and give everything a close inspection and clean. I do a manual clean around the heads each day I use the printer anyway.

I’ll also get some wipers and a few spare dampers on order just in case

I’ll update on progress later 🙂

    Thanks
