  • Covering an out of shape trailer

    Hey guys

Does anyone have any experience in covering an old trailer?

The bodywork is shocking, adhesive everywhere, flaking paintwork. If I put vinyl over it, it would show everything.

I was personally thinking applying the vinyl to a 1mm board and sticking that to the trailer but not sure what that would look like.

    Any advice would be great.

I imagine if its in that state the customer isn’t going to pay to have it done properly.

Use a blade scraper, 8 inch wide one from B&Q and drag it down the face, not push or you will end up there all day stripping it and possibly gauging the surface. This will remove all the flaky bits.

soak the glue in Tar and Glue remover and scrap that off in dragging motion using a small blade scraper.

clean the whole thing down using meths or isopropynol.

print and laminate the vinyl with the thickest calendered media you can get and laminate it with a MATT laminate.
the matt finish hides most marks. gloss shows it up. just hange the drops of vinyl like wallpaper and i bet it comes up great in comparison to its previous life.

sheeting it wont look good. joins, rivets/fixings etc will all show and it will most likely swell if using cheap sheet material.

Thanks Rob, I’ll have a look for some thick stuff and give it a quick test before I go for it

Depends whether you want to "wrap it" or just brand it up. I’ve done a couple of "branding" jobs on old trailers and the 2mm foamboard (thats what we stock) has gone down a treat. Bit of banner\double-sided tape to stick them to the sides of the trailer. Cheap enough to keep the client happy, and easy enough to replace when they inevitability get battered.

We wrapped this trailer a few weeks ago. It was already wrapped in 3 shades of grey, with some cut vinyl text over the top.

We stripped the cut vinyl text, and just wrapped over the grey ‘wrap’. We wrapped over the coach bolts that were through the sides holding the cupboards in the trailer. There was a composite panel bolted to the side, again we just went over that. Last thing we wanted was it to start leaking if we broke the sealant plastered around it.

    Customer loved the finished job.

paint and even adhesive WILL show through the media no matter what you use. the tricks to minimise the amount visible.
thick cheap vinyl with matt laminate does it very well.
if your designing it, use a very abstract type bright background as it will through off noticing the tiny scales of adhesive and paint.

We had a different scenario but same principle. Our UK Sign Group wrap training truck was wrapped in our branding.
it also had Conspicuity reflective banding right around the outside of the truck on every side. I had 6 days notice that we would be partnering with Paperlinx at Fespa exhibition and the truck was to be used in the halls. the trouble is it had to be branded both paperlinx and uksigngroup. in short, we did just what i said above, wrapped everything over the top of the existing wrap and also reflective tape. you can see from the attached picture below it was solid flat white and blue with a matt finish. lights shining off it etc. yet you cannot see the 24 times 2 inch wide vertical strips from the overlaps of the wrap below it. nor do you notice the reflective 2 inch band right around the outside, again below the vinyl.
dont get me wrong, up close you can see it but not a single person passed comment on it and it was in a show. you look at something this size on the whole, rather than up close and personal. :smiles:

I have the pleasure of having to remove this lot and wrap the whole thing again within the next fortnight. not looking forward to that! :awkward:
