Tar and Glue remover vapours.
Was thinking there, my landlord ( a furniture maker ) who’s unit is next door to mine noticed a really strong solvent smell when entering his unit the other week. He asked me what I had been using so I told him it was tar and glue remover. Looking at the ingredients on the Autosmart Tardis bottle he reckons that it’s pretty bad for your health unless in my case the shutter or door is open with the roof extractor fan running, or a good quality face mask is used.
How bad do you reckon it is? He said it’s bad for your respiratory system and your brain 😕

Most of them are ‘petroleum distilates’…around the same fractions as petrol or lighter.
So basically full of hydrocarbons and a few ‘avoid skin contact’ & ‘harmful by inhalation’ if in high concentrations.
Ventilation or a full mask suitable for solvents not just a dust mask (has replaceable filter cartridges)….handy for Darth Vader impressions.
Like all solvents they have an effect on your system…rarely permanent unless very high concentrations that interfere with oxygen uptake or are directly toxic…probably killed off more brain cells having a few too many beers!
The PPM concentrations will probably be pretty low in the room, they just tend to smell a lot to people not around them a lot…bit like running a solvent printer..
Get COSHH data if you are concerned and take suitable precautions.

Went looking…PDF attached. Probably the worst thing is the xylene… it’s not great stuff (along with toluene) used to be in loads of solvent products, more restrictive these days.

Thanks Dave. I have never been bothered about it in the past but he made me a bit concerned about it. Yeah as you say with the beers I have probably done more damage in the past but enjoyed it slightly better 😀

Thanks Kevin. I buy stuff from them all the time, he probably did offer at one point and no doubt I would have said I never needed it. It’s not something I had ever worried about until my landlord seemed concerned about it.

Was mainly wondering what other people do to protect themselves from any harmful effects of inhalation if anything.

Face mask with replaceable (organic) solvent filters.

Nothing with visors, but buy a quality product and will do great for dust, spray paint and sloshing solvent around.
Use one myself when spraying jobs…
