  • Nightmare Clients – Have you ever ‘fired’ one?

    Hi Guys,
From personal experience, has anyone actually gone through with ‘firing’ a nightmare client? How did you do it?

Does anyone have an amusing anecdote about ‘the client from hell’ or an unprofitable time waster that you just had to let go?

just last week got rid of two customers. First one I’ve done small jobs for for years but having done layout for two windows 150cm x 150cm with a coloured back ground and having faffed about with colours, weight of letters, fonts, caps or no caps i gave up. On his sixth request for amendment to artwork i worked out a rough price and replied i was not doling anymore alterations until he agreed the price. Not heard a whisper from him since.

2nd one similar messing about. Gave him the price before doing yet more work on it, again nothing back, not even a thank you for all the work you’ve done so far but will leave it.

need to weed out the time wasters much quicker, have far too many good customers who are delayed by the few.

Customers who had trouble with another signwriter are usually the cause of that trouble.
I had one today who began a phone call by moaning about the competition.
I let him go on for a few seconds then then asked him to email me with the details
This got him upset, and he yelled and slammed the phone down.
"Fair enough", I said to the lifeless phone.

    Life is too short 🙂

You’re absolutely right Simon. The alarm bells always go off in my head whenever I get a new customer enquiry that begins with "I’ve been let down by the signmaker I normally use that’s why I’ve come to you". Nine times out of ten they’ve just been "fired" by the competion 😕

Requesting a deposit before going ahead with the order or doing artwork often gets rid of the wasters.

Bigger jobs we let it go on for a bit as the reward is greater, but small jobs we cut it short very quickly.

Some people don`t seem to realize we have other work and not there just to serve them. One estate agent requested a 2hr meeting to discuss his banner requirements, he emailed the finished artwork when i said that would cost him £100

We’re sacking one, where the MD rang me up going ape, because HIS staff didn’t issue me a Purchase Order.

I’m still confused as to how HIS staff’s incompetence to follow THEIR proceedures, is MY fault.
