vinyl chipping problems
Hi,
i have made this sun strip for a customer, they fitted it as per my instructions.
its chipping off with the wipers and looks bad quality.
the issue is, the vinyl is Metamark MD5-a, so not cheap
and, i have one on my own car fitted a long time before this one and i have no issues.
what would the cause be, and is there anything i can do to prevent it?

Looks like they’ve been scraping ice off the windscreen and catching the edge.

If it was the wipers the marks would be in the same place every time not all along the strip.

Sorry just realised that the wipers are going all the way to the top of the windscreen so they may be catching it. -
Not being funny but vinyl is not designed to have wipers going over it, they will always snag on the lip causing the said problem some people will put smaller wipers & wiper arms on. The only other solution is to fit it internally

Personally I would of thought that if it was fitted correctly and it was wipers causing it, then you would only have 2 points of damage and that would be the direct point the wipers hit the vinyl.
I’d have a guess and say that the vinyl wasn’t fitted correctly and the damages are caused due to the vinyl lifting in those areas and the wipers then catching it, does that make sense?
If you look under the E, you’ll notice a semi circle, is that a sign that it’s not fitted correctly?

In my opinion. Metamark MD5 will not crack like that. I think is not fitted properly. I’m assuming they’ve applied with water, because windscreen is not flat, edge will not stick easy (without heat gun), small half bubble will form, that will catch the wipers and the problem started.
I don’t give warranties for vinyls that are installed by the clients them-self. Simple.
Some kind of solution will be to cut 5,10 mm line to make it straight again.

As others suggested. May have not been applied correctly, so once the edges started to lift and then his window wipers continue hitting the edge it was only a matter of time.
I wouldn’t be happy replacing unless it was fitted by me.

We fit lots of Sunstrips every week. Never had this and we use Oracle 651 wet So not quit as good as MD5.
I would say this is a definite case of someone using an ice scraper and forgetting they have a sunstrip on there, especially this time of year. Too much of a coincidence. Wipers will not do this.
The only time we had a problem was letters fitted to the rear window and the same happened. Finally the customer admitted they used a scraper and forgot it was on there. -
I would say it is fitted wrong..
the windscreen is soaking wet and the car is bone dry. so i assume the picture was taking right after installation.
there for the problem is the installation as it should not be fitted wet for a start.
furthermore, if the window is cold, the adhesion will be greatly reduced with that alone.
throw in a window wiper hitting it every two seconds and there you have a fail.the bottom line is your customer fitted it themselves so you are not responsible for any defects occurred as a result.

I wouldn’t apply MD5A wet (it kinda defies the point of air release) and I’m sure some water will stick in the channels on the adhesive, reducing the grab of the adhesive.

Cant see how any warranty could be offered on that at all. It only needs a bit of dirt on the wipers to make them almost abrasive as they hit the sunstrip. I doubt any vinyl is warrantied against wipes anyway.

Hi Mark,
We fit a lot of sunstrips to performance vehicles which are used on track and we use a similar materials to what you have used and we have seen this before.
Our issues were caused by the teams jetwashing the sunstrips or windowscreen area with a high pressure jet wash. They say they have fitted it properly but most of the time water is used and still prevalent under sunstrip.
