I have a question relating to graphic designed vehicle wraps
I seem to be posting more and more lately, but its good to get opinions.
I have a question relating to graphic design for vehicle wraps.
I am struggling to come up with good ideas for creating wraps, and part wraps. But i do have a huge market wide open to me, if i can get the issue bottomed out.
I run a Facebook page, on my own with just under 12’000 members. most of which love to modify their cars. It’s a focus group incase you hadn’t guessed 🙂i suppose I’d like to know if there are any courses or ways i can learn some of the styles and techniques people are looking for these days, or, are there any of you in here that specialize in motorsport type work that would be able to help out?
I’m happy to show some of my half finished ideas in the pics, they all seem to be lacking that look that’s popular. maybe it’s just that I’m crap at designing, feel free to say so, but everything so far has been self taught. I learnt everything i know about the industry on my own, until i found this forum!These designs were all done roughly, but no one has bought one after seeing these, and i cant really blame them they want something that says wow… and these don’t do it.
how do i get my designs to say wow?
most of them want to see a proof, before buying but this is time consuming so i do these rough designs in a few minutes to give an idea.
anyway, please be nice.

Nothing wrong with the designs, so what is it that your friends/customers don’t like ? And more to the point, what exactly is it they are looking for ?

I have no idea I think some of them are dreamers so wouldn’t ever go through with it, the others are looking for more Motorsport style graphics I wouldn’t say these were. I’m not really sure what I’d class these as but you wouldn’t see them in Motorsport really -
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your designs – these things always look better in reality. One word of caution though is copyright. If you are going to be using Marvel comics images you would need their permission to do so.

We have been dealing with the car mod fraternity for years and years and I don’t think there is a market for that sort of thing. People think its going to cost around £50 and take Ten minutes so they won’t pay the hundreds of pounds its worth.
Most are just time wasters when they see something like that. Explain the cost first and they will run a mile before you waste any time. -

Have you looked at paint protection and headlight tinting films? Pre cut kits?

I am getting interest, most that are serious end up going to blueprint in Nottingham. They charge a hefty amount but do a good job. There are some that want it, but admittedly not many. Maybe I should try another avenue like you say with the tint films etc

As Phil said. Be very, very careful with copyright/trademark issues.
I got unwittingly hit with a trademark violation on eBay because some nobhead (Mark Coop) went and reqistered a trademark in Spain (after retracting his attempt in the UK) for the phrase ‘Keep Calm And Carry On’. I joined a campaign to get the trademark revoked, but it unfortunately failed.
I was selling stickers that said this and got my account ‘indefinitely suspended’. That was nearly 6 years ago and it’s still ‘indefinitely suspended’. I belive it ended quite a few small businesses their livliehood at the time.
Also, there can be some serious legal ramifications and costs. So tread carefully.

Yes these are just proofs, if they wanted them doing i would pay for the use of the image and include that in the price.
Same thing happened to me on eBay, lost my account for two weeks, that was my only income. But the trademarked item wasn’t actually trademarked, eBay took no notice of this though and cost me a fortune,
So I didn’t pay my fees 🙂 they still ask for the money now -
wouldn’t get too hung up on the car mod scene Mark. it changes so very very often.
here today gone tomorrow kinda thing.
ive been driving 11 years, when max power magazine was still on the go and it was all crazy bodykits, then it was fast and furious style graphics, then came house of kolor paints with all there special effects etc, then the euro style scene where everything was smoothed etc. now it seems everyone keeps there cars as original as possible and its all uprated engine parts etc.
most of the folk still doing the crazy modifying will be the new drivers, young folks with there first car, i wouldnt imagine to many would have the money to pay for good work from you.
i honestly think wrapping as a car thing will die off, a fad if you like,
where as it may be worth concentrating on commercial vehicles where it has lifespan?
there are the rally and track day guys though? but generally they offer you to put your name on and do the job for free .

I guess I can agree a little with that, not sure wraps will fade off, they aren’t that popular as it is anyway so I think it will just continue at the same rate for a while.
I did get have a contact in the vw golf cup, however he asked for an almost half wrap, then printed graphics all over including the roof. Sounded great, until he said I couldn’t use my own logo on there as he was having his new graphics company logo on there… Basically selling my products as his own to build his reputation up.
Then, said he had been quoted £55.
That’s when I stopped doing any work on it and ignored him
Clearly trying it on, the vinyl would cost more
