  • Number Plates – Printing Onto Reflective

    Hi Guys
I know we have a few number plate orientated members on here so was hoping I could pick their brains.

I have been supplying number plates for a while now, and use two different systems. (Laser and Thermal)

When I first started out I assumed the OKI Laser printer would fulfill all my needs, alas it failed at printing directly onto reflective, and the print basically rubbed off. I questioned my number plate supplier and was informed that to print the reflectives for acrylic plates I’d need a thermal printer.

My two setups are now –
OKI c610 – printing onto clear film in reverse and rolling onto metal backed reflectives
Second is the traditional Acrylic style plates, I have a Pronto Thermal Printer that I use to print registration numbers onto Nikkalite reflective, and laminate with the acrylic.

While the Pronto does the job, but its not the most reliable printer… and I also find the print finish a little pixelated when compared with the OKI laser.

SO my question is really, is there anyway I can use my OKI to print both types of plate?
I have seen videos, showing laser printers printing onto reflective so hoping it might be possible.

Kind Regards and thanks for any help / advise.

when we printed number plates we used a citizen printer, ran it from corel I seem to remember, it had an extension screwed to it so reflective could rest on it.

from memory the printer was only £250, i think it was 200 dpi so graphics wasn`t great but ok for numbers

    Hello Denise

    Thanks for your reply.
Sounds like you had a Citizen CLP-2001 printer, the pronto I use is the exact same as that model and uses the same drivers too. However I was unaware it would run from Corel, so thanks for the info.

Agree with your last statement, it doesn’t have a good DPi but does the job ok.

From doing a little research, it would seem that some companies sell "modified" laser printers to do this… got a message back from tennants, however when they modify the firmware it can only work with either "films" or "Reflective" not both… :shake:

Got to be an option to change something to allow the print to adhere to reflective sheets, anyone have any thoughts? (puppy-eyes)
