Whalebone pub plea to repair famous M&R Ales brewery sign

One of Hull’s best-known pubs has issued a plea for help to repair one of its famous signs. The illuminated Moors & Robson sign had to be taken down from the mountings outside The Whalebone in Wincolmlee last December, when it was damaged in high winds. Now, landlord James Reading is hoping someone will volunteer their services to help get the sign advertising the former Hull-based brewery back in working order.
The wooden-framed sign is believed to date from the 1940s, but became a feature of the pub more recently when the late former landlord and keen local historian Alex Craig salvaged it and hung it above the pub’s Lincoln Street entrance. Mr Craig died last year, but his successor now wants to restore the sign as a tribute to his old boss.
"I worked as the pub manager under Alex and what you see in the pub now, with all the old photographs of Hull on the walls, is down to him," said Mr Reading. "He was so passionate about the city’s history." "He rescued the old Moors & Robson sign, so it would be fitting if I could get it repaired and dedicate it to him for all the work he did here."
Mr Reading said the restoration project would be perfect for a group of apprentices or trainees from a specialist local company to get their teeth into. "We think it’s probably the only one of its kind left in the area," he said. "It was still working perfectly before it got damaged in the high winds." "Unfortunately, I had to get it taken down because it became a safety hazard due to the disrepair it suffered."
Large sections of the wooden frame are rotting away, but Mr Reading believes that with a bit of expert TLC, the old sign could soon be hanging outside the pub once again. Anyone who thinks they can help with the restoration project and can provide any services, should call 07506 868461.
