I’ve been asked to provide a sign on a tray – I’ve never installed a sign tray before so I’m wondering about whether I need to consider the dimensions of the aluminium angle used to fix it to the wall. Should I be using different sizes depending on the depth of the sign tray? or can will it be OK to just use 1" x 1" x 1/8"?

The reason I ask is that sign trays are obviously made with different size returns depending on the customer’s requirements, so if a tray is 30mm deep, I know a piece of 1" x 1" aluminium angle would be sufficient, but if the tray is say 80mm, should I be opting for a wider piece, for example 2" x 1" x 1/8"? or thicker perhaps? or will the same 1" x 1" alu angle be suitable?

I’ve searched the forum for information on this but there isn’t any advice regarding the dimensions. I know alu angle is strong so it’s probably a stupid question, however I do not want some obscure event to occur, someone gets hurt and something relating to the sign come back to me because I used a narrower fixing than I should have.

Thanks for that – I was thinking the same really … so a 2"x 1" to support a tray with 80mm return wouldn’t be a million miles out.

Regarding the supply of alu angle with the trays … I want to manufacture my own trays after watching some online videos making it look pretty straightforward – plus there is quite a bit of info on the forum about making your own.

I’m the type of person who will give anything a go, at least until I’ve wasted enough time and money to decide it’s something best left to the experts ha ha.

The other thing you need to take into account is what access you have, it’s not always possible to pre drill the tray & the rail which is where detailed site surveys come in handy. If you have to drill onsite have you got enough access with a thin aluminium rail. Are there any obstructions which will cause problems fitting the tray to the rail using screws or rivets is something else you want to check before you turn up to fit.

Thanks Martin. I’ve considered the access, obstructions etc already… I think drilling on site is the preferred option as it leaves it open to the possibility of an issue arising if I pre-drill.

I’ve recently made up some detailed site survey forms to help with this kind of thing … basically to help me remember everything I need to check lol… or at this stage in the game, what I think I need to check, I’m sure the forms will evolve as I learn more and more. In addition, I feel the forms will give me some backup should the need arise – I hope it won’t – so if there was ever any issues with the sign in the future I can show exactly what was checked before the sign was installed – kind of covering my back-side, as they say.
