  • Canvas Lamination – what is best?

Posted by Alison Evans on 1 March 2015 at 21:05

    Hi All

Well, haven’t been on these forums for a while, but hopefully somebody could help me out 🙂 I have a canvas printing business which is growing daily and now I want to try to Laminate all my canvases. I currently use Canon IPF8300 Printers and only Genuine pigment inks.

I recently purchased a Giclee style lamination from Ebay – (which was awful) as the colours ran everywhere with the roller…I don’t know what is best for lamination of canvas prints. I’ve heard the sprays are better?

Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

The inks shouldn’t be running at all if you are using pigment inks & coated canvas. I haven’t done vast amounts of canvas printing but done a few & never had any problems using a Giclee laminate & roller. I bought it after reading about it on the forum a few years ago. I don’t have the same machine or inks as yourself but I am still using aqueous pigmented inks so there shouldn’t be to much difference.

    Hi Martin

Thanks for your reply. Well, one of the colours was a very rich red and it caused a lot of smudging on the roller which in turn ran through the canvas. Perhaps I pressed too hard with my roller but I felt there was a lot of bubbles on the canvas too…

Just wondered if I choose the wrong Lamination liquid.

    Hi Alison,

The best liquid varnish i found was Glamour 2 from breathing color UK. Its currently £93.99 + Vat for 5L but its concentrate and you can dilute up to 50% if using spray gun and 30% if using hand roller.

I used the Sealey HVLP2000 spray system and never had issues with ink running. I also run the Canon 8300 with genuine inks.

    Regards
    Tas

the only issue I had with giclee lam (pva based?) was that they streaked badly when room temp was too cold, in desperation I used some aerosol car paint laquer… have used it ever since!

    Hi Tas

That’s good advice – Thank you I may look into that.

Hugh – that’s exactly what happened to my canvas. It streaked badly and my warehouse is pretty cold so sounds like the reason for it. Never heard of using Aerosal car paint laquer before….what is the protection like with that?

Just use Mr Sheene furniture polish. Try and scratch it after applying that.
