Leicester Square gets animated + Video

With a high profile new store opening on London’s world famous Leicester Square, The Window Film Company were approached during the fit-out process to provide a temporary solution that would deliver both privacy and raise awareness of the impending opening.

Nickelodeon chose the Leicester Square property as the location for their flagship retail outlet, their first such store in Europe. As a result, the prime London location was about to begin a huge transformation, with a complete internal refurbishment taking place. With a vast number of visitors frequenting the area on a daily basis, it was important that this extensive work was shielded from view, ensuring that the impact of the new store wasn’t diluted by members of the public seeing into the store in advance of the official opening.

Equally vital was the need to use the building to make a bold and impressive statement and by covering the multi storey building with bright, colourful graphics featuring Nickelodeon favourites such as SpongeBob Squarepants, Dora the Explorer and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it was possible to deliver the necessary privacy whilst also telling the millions of tourists and shoppers that frequent Leicester Square exactly what was coming.

After discussions with the client, it was agreed that a low-tack vinyl would be used, with the qualities of the film making it the ideal choice for a variety of reasons. It provides an excellent surface for printing onto, is long-lasting and durable and can be applied to the external face of glass – on this occasion an internal application was not possible.

There was a total of 61 panes, with a combined size of over 120 square metres, with full colour designs featuring to be applied to each window, in effect, creating a graphics wrap round the three sided façade.

The artwork was bright, colourful and bold, leaving passers-by in no doubt as to the identity of the new store, and this was supplied to The Window Film Company’s in-house graphics and print team for preparation. Each piece of artwork was matched to a pane of glass, with each panel printed using a UV printer. As with all jobs, the printing was carried out at the Company’s Buckinghamshire headquarters, allowing for continual quality control and a fast response to any issues or tight deadlines.

With each panel printed and checked, the film was installed by a team of The Window Film Company’s fully trained and experienced fitting teams. The work was completed over a two-day period, with the finished job giving the premises an impressive and eye-catching appearance which will be seen by countless shoppers, tourists and other visitors whilst the fit-out work is completed. Upon completion, the artwork immediately began to catch the eye, with passers-by of all ages stopping to admire the new display, with many posing for photos in front of the bright, stylish and instantly recognisable artwork.
