  • Advice needed with a Print fitted to a large Chimney?

Hey Everyone, can i ask for a bit of advice please? We have to do a full colour mural 5m long by 3m high onto a circular wall. Its for a job in a new building that has been built around an old chimney with the chimney going up through the middle of the building if you know what i mean? We have been asked to put a vinyl mural right around the base of the chimney which is totally circular. Its inside and has a nice painted surface. My question is what way would you all do this? Would you print and matt laminate it and squeegee it on sideways or would you squeegee it up and down. Its going to be a tricky one as the image is a photograph and has to match up the whole way across. Thanks in advance.

I was thinking about wallpapering it and hiring a decorator to fit it. Normally we wouldnt worry but this thing is properly rounded lol

I would hang it in vertical drops.
If indoors and wallpaper is not an issue as far as durability is concerned. then by all means paper it using a decorator if the install is worrying you. paper and paste will allow it to be moved, lift and lay multiple times.
i would allow approx 2-3 inch of bleed top and bottom. once in place trim to suit. but the bottom will have to be trimmed as you work your way around. the bleed is to help with alignment issues. (you can butt-join cut it if overlap is an issue once applied)
installation isnt that difficult, but when you get all the way around, and only then will you see how far out you are. so make sure your overlaps are large because regardless to how flat/smooth this is i bet its out a mile on being a perfect circle.
if you squeegee on using vinyl etc you will definitely need vertical running swipes. do not apply horizontal or you will kink the media 12 inches into it… 😀

easier solution. get a trade only printer like macroart to print you a 3m wide by whatever length digital banner and simple wrap it around and fix the join using double sided tape. you "will" need to pin it at the top in some fashion though or it will slip or droop in areas due to weight if not a continual fix. in fact, maybe the wallpaper or vinyl would be better. :lol1:

if using vinyl on to a painted surface. remember one hit and its stuck or your lifting the emulsion back off on rear of vinyl.

Hi rob, thanks for your help. What u described was pretty much what we where going to do. I was gonna leave 100mm bleed top and bottom and just slice it every time it starts to bend around. As you say getting it 100% accurate right the whole way round is gonna be the hard bit. I had thought about a banner, id also thought about 5mm foamex panels bent round and butted together and taped/gripfilled on but there is intercoms, keypads, fire alarms and other annoying obstacles that need to be cut around. Its going up tomorrow so ill let you know how it goes with a pic etc.
