UK signage versus the rest…
Something mentioned on another thread just now got me thinking.
As signmakers, we find it impossible to go anywhere without looking at the signage, approving or disapproving of each on it’s merits… don’t we?
Anyway, I can’t help but notice when I walk around UK towns and cities that there is a huge amount of cheap and (quite honestly) ghastly signage up where there should be something inviting – or at least smart. I see banners stretched over old facias – rarely fitting correctly, nasty foamboard wavering across the building, flat panels with no attempt to conceal the fixings or just plain awful design… I know we’ve all ‘had to do what the customer wants’ from time to time but, why is this so much more eveident in the UK than abroad?
In the past 18months I’ve been lucky enough to visit Rome, Moraira and Barcelona, in each case I can honestly say that almost all of the signage I saw, from main roads, shopping districts and plazas, to the whiffy little side streets away from the touristy bits, was all of a pretty good standard, colourful, inviting, etc. from bog stores to tiny cafes..
Why can’t we do that?
Are we far more expensive than spanish or italian sign makers or are most of our customers just after cheap cheap cheap all day? I can’t remember the last time I quoted on a (new customer) shop front and didn’t lose out to some cheap half price tat, in fact I rarely bother to even quote on them now as they’re more often more trouble than they’re worth;- quoting for the ‘I must have big 3d letters with led lighting and blah blah’ yet when it comes to it, they put up some naff digi flood coat that looks nothing like the enquiry!!
is it just me?
