It does 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds and is the fastest police car in the country, although it won’t be pulling you in for doing 32mph in a built-up area.

Not to be outdone, just after the Italian police received their Huracan and the New South Wales Police took delivery of the Lexus Hybrids, the Avon and Somerset Constabulary in the UK have just received another fast machine. This time they received a unit of Ariel Atom 3.5R, not for chasing criminals but to promote motorcycle safety! Makes sense since you have to wear a helmet to drive it, and it only seats two. The Ariel Atom 3.5R, dubbed as the “PL1″, is powered by Honda’s K20a engine from the Honda Civic Type R, with an added supercharger which propels it from 0-100km/h in 2.6seconds, matching the acceleration of a superbike. The PL1 will sport bright yellow and blue Battenburg markings similar to the British “Bobbies”. There are also standard police sirens and slimline pursuit lights just like a standard issue police car. The police will use this Ariel Atom PL1 as part of the force’s Safer Rider campaign and it will be displayed at various events throughout the region, probably just to scare riders.

The Atom 3.5R has been wrapped to give it the look of a police car, highlighting Avon and Somerset’s campaign to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents. Sergeant Andy Parsons who heads up the UK Safer Rider campaign, says: “In the UK motorcyclists make up just one percent of total road traffic but account for nearly 20 percent of all road user deaths. They are roughly 35 times more likely to be killed in a road traffic collision than someone in a car. We really want to create awareness in order to see these numbers reduced." "The car can be seen on the ORAFOL stand at the Emergency Services Show at the NEC in September. ORAFOL is the manufacturer of VC 612 Flexibright, the livery film used on the car”

The car can be seen on the ORAFOL stand at the Emergency Services Show at the NEC in September. ORAFOL is the manufacturer of VC 612 Flexibright, the livery film used on the car. The firm’s Reflexite VC 612 is a reflective livery film and is available in silver, green, blue, red, yellow, fluorescent lime, and fluorescent orange. Due to its flexibility, it can be used on curved surfaces like racing cars and motorbikes. Ariel’s Atom 3.5R is 3.4m long and 1.2m high, the weighs just 612 kg. It has no roof, doors, windscreen, carpet, heater or stereo, and is very fast. Sadly the car is being used as a talking point for the bike safety campaign rather than as a regular police car.
