Drop shadow issues – help please?
Hi everyone im currently trying to print a design for a sign and having issues with how the drop shadow is printing. the design looks great on screen.
the design is made up from 1 jpg and the rest is basic shapes and text, the company name has the problematic drop shadow.
the colours im using are grey and purple for the sign background with black and white text.
ive tried creating the drop shadow at a bitmap by duplicating my text and also by using the drop shadow tool.
i always export as eps to versaworks.my problem is when i print the design the drop shadow looses its colour and he opacity doesnt show the background colours properly and the edges of the shadow have some ghosting around the edges.
has anyone else had similar issues or know an easy fix for this?

Rich,
It would be useful to say what software, rip and printer you are using. Uploading an image of the printed media would also be a help.

Hi thanks for the reply, I’m using Corel x5 for the design with versa works to print and my printer is a Roland sp300 versacamm.

I regularly get this issue… only way I’ve found is to convert to bitmap prior to printing, I print direct from corel to my HP with no rip.

Had similar issues, if you have acrobat pro, open the PDF and select the following:
Advanced -> Print Production -> Flattener Preview
This will highlight any problematic images with transparencies.
You can try and fix this in Acrobat by
Advanced -> Print Production -> Preflight I’d probably choose digital output, and click analyse and fix.
I spent many hours with one PVC banner artwork that just wouldn’t work, and found this ‘quick’ fix.

Transparencies are problem area that trip alot of rips, you can try publishing the pdf as pdfx1a – this will create a bitmap around the ‘effect’ but it is worth doing a test print first. You can’t beat flattening the effects first and laying the vector objects on top. I always work in cmyk but others may not agree.

can never remember which but you should see the bad effect in the preview
to do with a mix of rgb shadow and cmyk background if sending as a cmyk from corel change in the eps export to rgb.
also the printer needs calibrating
