Do any of you use either the "Paypal Here" or Barclays "Barclaycard Anywhere" mobile card terminals – The ones which work through your smartphone?

I’m looking to do a few trade shows and have been trying to research the items without much success,
Paypal Here works via bluetooth and the terminal carries it’s own charge, I like the security aspect of this as it means I don’t have to have my phone in easy reach of passers by – Unlike the Barclays reader which is connected via a small cable .

The main advantage I see in the barclaycard reader is the 2.9% fee per trans, rather than paypals 3.4% + 20p per trans – though I guess that’s only a difference of £5.20 on a 1k sale!

The advantage of the paypal reader is that it doesn’t matter if I switch banks, I’m not tied to any specific account.. Hmm – I think that might have just decided it for me!

Do either take payments when not in range of a signal or wifi? I know the proper mobile (sim operated) terminals can store payments and just put them all through when the terminal comes into signal range, I understand there’s an element of risk here but if the show is in a dead area or the 3/4G & wifi are chogged up with people checking facebook, it could be an issue.

Anyway – real actual "i have and use one" advice will be gratefully accepted.

As I mentioned to you on Facebook, I’d opt for a mobile terminal with its own sim card (and possibly wifi) connection, so shpuld work in the shop, shows and onsite.

I’d recommend direct card solutions a genuinely independent provider (not reseller!) That is visa & mastercard approved.

The merchant account is seperate to your business account so changing banks isn’t a problem.

We opted for the paypal. So far so good although it’s only for ’emergencies’ when customers have no cash or can’t do bank transfer and they are not leaving without payment.
    Connection required though.

Easy to link one terminal to different accounts on several devices or many phones to one terminal.l as the terminal isn’t the important thing, it’s the account on the device.

Like not having a standing fee as it’s seldom used.

    Thanks David H,
my only issue with the mobile card readers is that I’m tied into a contract, barclays want over £35 a month and the cheapest I found (through a FSB offer) was still £30 a month, I may only use it a few times a year so it’s not worth the extra £200+ at this point in time.

    Thanks also David R,
I think the beauty of the paypal reader is that I can choose where the money goes – ie. to which paypal account, or to divvy it up to whicher account it needs to go to once all taken in. The barclays (or any contracted terminal) will only let me send to one account to which I’m tied…

I think for the sake of £70 I’ll go with the paypal reader and see how I get on.
