  • Advice, removing birds nests from signage?

Posted by David Hammond on 31 May 2014 at 10:22

The fitting company we use have been and measured up a large warehouse sign for us.

The signs knackered and birds have made their nests inside the sign.

How should we handle this? I don’t think pigeons are protected but the fitters don’t want to remove the sign and nests and just leave these birds homeless.

I’ve never dealt with this kind of thing before.

having done a bit of tree work before, I think it’s illegal to move a nest with young in it, you have to wait until the fledglings bugger off and clear it before they lay another batch.

fairly certain but ring your local council for proper guidance.

I agree – If in doubt, do what is right. 😎

I just called the RSPCA 2 weeks ago for something similar.
birds nest at edge of dorma window and scaring the crap out my little girl at night with movement and 5am squawking. asked them to come remove it and they just said, they will leave soon enough, once they do seal it up and job done but they "wont help".
sure as sugar, they have gone now and alls good!

This might sound a little harsh.. but did the birds apply for planning permission before building their nest in one of your signs.

If I decided to build a house in a field without planning permission – the local authorities would have no hesitation in turfing me out.

Witness the hapless pensioners in Spain who spent their life savings on houses that later were "deemed" to be unlawfull and were bulldozed by the spanish authorites.

If it was me I’d be saying fuck the birds – and change the sign anyways

    😕

The PR potential of this is big.
Tell them to wait, get the local papers on to the story "Company delays upgrade due to nesting birds" Stick in a "Nest cam" and keep the story of the fledgeling birds updated and well publicised.
There could be photos of the rough- but- heart- of- gold sign fitters who didnt want the nest disturbed. The sign maker who was prepared to turn down a lucrative job to keep the birds safe.
You could spin this one out for ages!
    🙂

    Simon.

I agree with others in that I’m sure the law states that you must allow the young to leave the nest before disturbing it. A pain I know when you’re trying to complete a job.

Absolutely love Simon’s idea though – could be a great bit of advertising for both you and your client.

Google RSPB, there will be a local office/centre, they will be able to tell you exactly what you may or may not do regarding bird nests.

I’ve rang the RSPB – All nesting birds are protected.

I’ve then rang Natural England who issue permits to remove nests, who after explaining the situation, have had me a call a Wildlife Advisor.

I am now awaiting for them to call back and see how we proceed… even with a licence to remove the nests, we then need to hand them over to an ‘authorised individual’.

I’ve a feeling this is going to get expensive. 😕

You should have kept Schtum (turfed the burds out and got on with it). Now look what you’ve gone and done. You’ve gone and opened a whole can of worms. :nag2:

The issue arises in that I am not fitting the sign. This is being subcontracted out, as it requires a cherry picker, and it’s a rather large job, (aprox 16m x 61cm, removing the existing sign and timber, all from about 25m up).

It is the fitters who don’t want to get the sh!t when they turn them out.
