  • How to fold vinyl round the edges of ACM

Posted by Simon Worrall on 22 May 2014 at 23:33

    Hi
I have a client who has ordered some 4mm ACM panels.
She has asked me to fold the vinyl round the back, so the edges are the same background colour as the face.
Apart from using an expensive wrap vinyl, is there anything I can do to make sure it does not fail in time?. IT is going outside and will get plenty of weather.

    Simon.

Simon, I’ve done quite a lot of panels that way & never had a problem with it failing or coming away. I use oracal 551 for most of my signage so not an expensive vinyl. I just normally fold about an inch round the edge, make sure it is stuck down properly with a roller & then blast it with the heat gun :lol1:

I do this often, but don’t heat treat it after, not had one fail on me yet.

    And me, 551 heat-treated.

Same as others – leave a minimum of an inch over – wrap round. No heating and frankly not caring too much about the finish as nobody will ever see it.

Improves the look immensely, especially on printed panels.

I don’t use heat either and always wrap when possible. I have an old felt squeegee I use for rubbing over edges to get a sharp fold. No failures either as long as you put at least 20mm on the rear.

    Thanks all for your input.
I am glad to hear it is common practice.
I have wrapped the vinyl round the back to 25mm, and it looks great. I am going to post heat it to make sure it stays put.

Any tips for the way you all do the corners?

    quote Harry Cleary:

I place the side of a steel rule against the edge of the board sticking far enough over the corner to trim past the "bleed" do this on both sided of each corner and it gives a nice 90 degree cut so once folded over there is no overlap or board showing especially for White PVC when wrapping with a darker colour.
