  • Cloned Website?

I went on line today to buy my Road Tax. Did a quick google search and came across this site:-
    https://taxdisc-direct.uk.com/

I then realised this was not the official DVLA website, but another site masquerading as such, and taking a hefty fee for the privelege of actring as an agent to buy road tax.

The site I should have been on is this one:-
    https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/home/intro
(Click on the "Apply for a tax disc" icon and you will be taken to a page almost indistinguishable from the scam site shown above)

I emailed the DVLA to advise them of the "cloned" version of their website and suggested it should be closed down.

The reply I received back was complacent to say the least. They agreed that it was a scam site and they were aware of it – but there was nothing they could do about it. However, I pointed out to them that this was surely a breach of copyright? The scam site was using their colours and icons to mislead people and pass themselves off as the official site.

Isn’t it shocking that scams like this are allowed to exist – and our officials even when made aware of these dubious schemes seem unprepared to take any action to stamp it out and protect the general public?

joking aside, i couldn’t agree more though, there is just too much of this type of thing going on.

I checked my junk mail earlier and I had three dodgy emails in there, two from banks wanting to check my details and and one saying I was due a tax return!!!! All fully blocked now but it’s scary how convincing they look and there’s no wonder people fall for it 😕

Since I first started this thread I have had more correspondence with gov.uk. They urged me to register my concern with google which I did

I’m pleased to say the site no longer comes up in google searches. Don’t know if this is as a result of my complaining but either way it’s good news.

Great news, but how crap when a government body has to get the public to act…

it’s the same when you request new birth, marriage or death certs. The Gov website always comes in under those who wish to charge you a lot more for the same thing!

always go to gov.uk sites, nothing else!

    Nice one Phill

The things people do to make a living out of unsuspecting and some times gullible people beggars belief.

Yes I see the advert is back. Seems like google are quite happy to take the advertising revenue and promote borderline criminal activity.
