Practice Panels Question?
Hi All
I would like some advice on what to use as practice panels for
brush lettering. For my own enjoyment I would like to get my brushes out
and have a go.I have not really done any sign writing since I learned the basics
on a City & Guilds Signwork course 20 years ago! Since then I have
only worked with vinyl.I know I could paint a panel and practice with one shot but I wondered
if any of the traditional guys used anything else? Can you use glass or
aluminium composite for example?Thanks for looking

Make up a few practice panels with gloss vinyl on 5mm foam offcuts – wipe off the paint when finished. Used these for pinstriping practice etc. and they work fine.

Glass is a great way to go…you can produce a paper template to place behind the glass and practice your letter shapes – easy to clean off when you are finished as well. (using the paper template is a bit like having to second coat the lead signwriters work in the good old days…you learn letter formation as long as you stay within the lines…bet you won’t get a Maul-stick to the back of the head if you do though – happy days as a trainee 😉 )
