Registration Number on the Roof of Motorhomes?
Hi guys
Some of you will know that I own a large motorhome, I’m also a member of a busy & lively motorhome forum 🙂
Often motorhomes are stolen and one idea suggested is to place the registration number of the vehicle on the roof so it could be easily seen from overhead, by a police helicopter for example.
It’s a long shot but, if you’ve ever had your 2nd home stolen, quite a gut wrenching experience.
So, my question:
1. What size lettering?
2. What font?
3. What vinyl?Any advice appreciated.

Different application but for same principle,
Rally Numbers for the Roofs of cars in WRC / IRC events the number is 350mm high in Arial Bold
these are to be seen from the TV helicopterAlthough in your case i’d say as big as possible,

Of course nothing stops these thieves from stealing your motorhome but it might help in its recovery.
Motorhomes can cost easily £50k + and are usually filled with personal effects that often aren’t covered by insurance. The chap who had his stolen yesterday took the usual precautions, but it didn’t deter the confident thieves:

Our Autotrail Apache 700 SE was stolen last night, it had a Sold Secure Bulldog wheel clamp & a steering wheel lock, but they still managed to take it
It was clocked on the police camera in Gisburn (Nr Clitheroe, Lancashire) @ 12:01 & then clocked again on another camera on the M65 half an hour later.
If anybody spots an Autotrail with a tribal eagle decal (21" x 21", which makes it distinctive) on each side, then please advise your local police.
We were due to go again this weekend, but my mrs is feeling so sick that she is not sure whether to replace it as she would not want to go through this again (it is like a feeling of suffering grief?).
Please keep your eyes peeled.

I would make the number as big as possible and use the vinyl as a mask to paint the number on. Paint is a lot harder to remove than a sticker.

Have done exactly the same on horse-box trailers – Helvetica medium at 320mm high – can be seen and read from over a 100mtrs away.

I made a sticker for a certain van driver in our neighbourhood that consistently parked blocking a junction. To make it that little bit hard to remove from his windscreen I cut it into 5mm squares and app taped over it. 😉
Weeding is just the same, removing it… well I don’t know because I haven’t used it in anger yet, but the tests were promising.
I doubt you’ll need to cut it so small, but anything to slow down the removal is worth a shot.

Have done roof registration stickers for campers but not done one for years. Any simple bold display font in a contrasting colour to the camper works well.
How about kpmf anti tamper or ultra destruct vinyl, the stuff is a pig to remove and comes off in tiny pieces and sticks like the proverbial! Careful when weeding as it sticks to everything including skin and scalpels 😉

Hide a Samsung smart phone somewhere in the motorhome (leaving it on a permanent charge) and use Samsungs GPS tracker system to locate the device at anytime (Tesco mobile now do Samsungs for as little as £7 a month which I beleive is a lot cheaper than a bespoke tracking system))

Hi Phil, many Motorhome owners do use tracking devices. I just purchased one of these:

I would cut it in reflective, then they won’t get it off. About 12" tall.

As a result of this thread I bought one of these and installed it into my Capri

I never realised before how easy and cheap it is to use this technology. Now when I stagger out of the pub late at night (and can’t remember where I left the car earlier) I simply phone the number – hang up – and I get a text back to my mobile with the cars exact location. Tis witchcraft I tell ye
