I am trying to figure out a way to make some signs for a customer that they can re-arrange the components of the sign themselves. The solution we came up with was to make the components on plastic boards and attach them to panels covered with material that velcro can stick to. Problem is, I dont’ know what the material is that velcro will stick to? Anyone have any idea? or an alternative suggestion? I had also thought about magnets but the client doesn’t want the signs to be too heavy.

I’m sure you can get a ferrous material from paper graphics, it’s a thin sheet that could be mounted to a board, then use thin mag sheeting for the movable bits?

I’m sure there will be others but we used to use a fabric called Nyloop. Came in a range of colours too.

Thanks David. Ive seen tbe ferous material you mentioned and this seems an ideal solution but no one seems to stock it any more? Havent heard of paper graphics before but will google them to see if they stock it. Thanks Neil, that sounds like what i am looking for. Just trying to source a supplier now

Have you tried Bisbell for ferro sheeting Phill, they use to do it but not bought any for a long time.

    Phil,
I used a few metres of the ferro sheet earlier this year from Anchor Magnets, they are quite helpful on the phone.
Neil mentioned using loop nylon with ‘hooks’ part of velcro. I used to use a lot of the stuff years ago when I did exhibition work and it’s a very good material. I used to buy both the self adhesive and the plain fabric and glue it to panels and if you fix it well you can hang quite heavy items on it, it comes in a good range of colours and unlike ferro sheet it can be smoothed around gentle curves.
I’ve just looked in the workshop and I still have some on the shelf if you want me to post you some bits to try.

Thanks Steve. I’m now looking at both options and at least now know what it is I need to ask for. I’ll phone around a few suppliers and get some idea of availability, colours, widths and prices.

Thanks again everyone for their help 😀

A couple of tips with the loop nylon: the self adhesive backed fabric sticks instantly and you can’t pull it off to re-position it so you need to plan and think the process through carefully. I used to buy a pva type adhesive made for the material, it has to be left to go tacky before you lay the fabric on, if you put the fabric on and its still wet it soaks through the fabric and shows as a mark.
In both cases a bit of practice is very helpful.

Yes, what Steve says. When we had a number the same size to do, we used to make a frame – similar to a hinged screen printing frame – to stretch the fabric across. Just stretched enough to lay normally but gets rid of any lurks. Also simple this way to keep it all straight. Lay the board under the frame and lower the frame down on top. squeegee it down lightly until gripped all over and again to grip fully. Used to make a lovely job.

Ultima displays stock nyloop. You can get self adhesive Nyloop as well.
