  • Best place to buy and fit a new dx4 head for RS 640. or DIY?

Posted by Simon Elliott on 10 December 2013 at 16:33

    Hi Folks,

Being Christmas and feeling full of good tidings and all that I thought I would treat my 4 year old RS640 to a new black head. It takes the brunt of all the cockled vinyl when it occurs so has gradually lost nozzle by nozzle despite lots of cleaning etc.

Black text and gradients are a nightmare!

Can anyone recommend a good place to obtain a DX4 head and a good engineer to fit it (we are in Horsham, near Gatwick).

Lastly, being one of those idiots that thinks he can fix anything… is it easy to fit and recalibrate afterwards? Doesn’t look too difficult…..

    Many thanks and Merry Christmas!!
    Simon.

We used vts for our RS640.

Have you considered swapping the black & yellow head over? 😉 that’s what we did not a problem!

Really?… didn’t know it was possible to swop colours without major drama.

They’re actually not that difficult to do, it’s just knowing what to do IF things don’t go as planned. Plenty of people sell them, such as Roland, Colourific, Digiprint….

The colours are all swappable and as David says, swapping black with yellow is a common thing to do if you’re not ready to shell out for a new head. There are plenty of companies in Surrey and surrounding counties that look after these machines, plus the odd freelancer here and there too, who will often be cheaper.

Thanks for the info. I think I will go for a new black head rather than prolonging the misery!.

I’m going to have a go myself. Does anyone know how or if I will need to input a new ‘Rank number’ ? If so I canst seem to find a setting in the menu to do so?

    Many Thanks
    Simon.

Thanks for asking Rob. Yes I did, coincidentally only yesterday though.

I purchased a DX4 head from an ebay supplier for £350, genuine unused roland with the head rank numbers etc. – no drama.

Fitting was rather easy, I was wandering what the techs charge so much money for. Took me 30mins to fit than about an hour and a half to set it up with the standard printer calibration settings and some common sense. Didn’t input the head rank etc and all seemed well.

First print was the roland colour chart and I noticed that whilst all my nozzles were printing the black was a couple of mm out of sync with the other colours.

After some more googling I realised I hadn’t done a full technical install. I downloaded the technical manual from somewhere in ying tong for $3 then set about installing the rank numbers and doing the proper tech calibrations. 2 more hours had it all sorted.

Now I know what i’m doing I reckon it would be a 1hrs install max.

Printing is perfect, blacks and greys are sweet as a nut and all for £350 that will be covered by my first print of black/grey stickers today. Very Happy.

Bloody hell!! You had a result with that. We only buy genuine Roland DX4’s and I think the retail is around £750. You do hear horror stories of people buying supposed genuine unused print heads and they turn up looking like a bag of mashed spanners.

DX4’s are actually quite easy to fit in the Roland’s, try doing it on an early Mimaki and it’s a different story!!

Glad you got it sorted anyway.

(and it’s Stafford by the way :lol1: )

Yes, very lucky. I looked in to a place in indonesia but when searching some posts there were horror stories of people being ripped off.

As for where I got Rob from… came up as rob @ uksignboards… should pay more attention, sorry!

Well done for sorting it anyway. Can you come and sort the printer I’ve been stuck on for the last 2 days for me now please?? 😳
