whats the best method of producing a swinging sign?
Posted by eSigns on 25 September 2013 at 08:12Hey all, we have our first shop sign job coming up and the customer wants a swinging sign. Now what we would like to offer him is a aliminium box type sign but I have a question about this. Are these just simply two sign trays attached to a frame with hooks from it? The other option is to make it around 2” thick but what would be the best method to create something modern looking? Cheers

Just tried them, very helpfull but they cant make a thick box sign unless attaching two foamex boards to a metal frame which wont give that seamless effect

Well I may be wrong (and usually am 😳 ), but that pole looks as though it may be from Tradesignz, so the panel quite probably is too…
If it is, it will be a 19mm Foamex-type, with the edges painted, and the faces flood-coated. Have done this a few times with their panels.

Is 19mm foam heavy enough for that sort of thing Lorraine? I would have thought it would blow about to much.

Seems to be fine Martin, there are 3 that I have done up my high street, they are all fine, even 5+ years later.
The boards are surprisingly heavy, must be very dense! -
My problem with 19mm foamex is my sign would be half the size that is in that picture so would probably flap alot in the wind any other suggestions to get that thick look maybe 15mm plywood? Although not a very nice edge any other ideas?

Could be a fibreglass one, from Signmaster direct.

If you were to go with something like an exterior grade plywood then it would be very easy to bead it round the edge, once it had been painted you shouldn’t be able to see the edge strip.
Fibreglass would be another option as Denise has suggested. Or another option if 19mm foam is OK for these sort of boards might be 2 19mm foam panels bonded together which would increase the weight & give you a 38mm panel. -
Ive used 19mm foam for these before with no problems at all. Heavier than you may think
-
yep Lorraine is prob right 2 x 19mm = 38mm substantial and heavy enough I reckon and that does look like a tradesigns pole

Done a few different types of hanging/swing signs.
I use 19mm foam board as my cheap option.
This can be cut square or bought from Tradesignz with a bullnose rounded finish. If you are going to do a few over time then buying an 8×4 sheet (amari) works out far cheaper and cutting it yourself, but if only a one off then just buy it ready cut from tradesignz as they will bond the eye4lets in for you as well.
Finish it can be floodcoated. I have use two different methods of colouring the edges: either wrap the edges with a cast vinyl which will seal with a bit of heat or I have also painted the edges and left a 1cm border around the edges of the flood coatPicture 1 Java – flood coated 19mm board with painted edges, Steel top banding & swing preventers.
Hanging – either use stainless eyelets bonded into the top edge or Steel edge banding. I have had the banding on the sign shown made by a local steel shop. Otherwise Signboard Systems sell them but with their own special hangers.
Other finishes can be used such as plastic framing from JAG.
Other boards :
Aluminium Plate (Ashby),Picture 2 Ashby 3mm Aluminium, powder coated white then vinyl graphics
On this you can see a system I have used for stopping swinging. These are a bit ugly but were added at a later date at the customers request as we get a lot of wind in Cumbria.
Nearly all my swing signs now are not swinging but fixed.Tradesignz have just started selling a bracket to stop swinging which looks easy to fit along the bottom edge, but I haven’t tried it yet

These Aluminium signs are well made and worth having a look at the signboard system website as they do several different frinishes withe the contemporary maybe close to what you are describing.
All depends on Budget really.
if want something extra special take a look at The Grains website for some bespoke Wooden signs. just trying to convince a current customer to go for one of these 🙂
