3M 1080 Brushed Metal range, anyone used it before?
Posted by Chris Foster on 23 September 2013 at 09:46Has anyone wrapped a vehicle using 3M 1080 Brushed Metal range? I’ve recently treated myself to an Audi S5 and was going to wrap her matt metallic grey (3M 1080) but having seen this brushed steel vinyl it looks rather nice!! Is it any different to using any other type of vinyl with regards to conformity (sp), stretch etc (i’ve done full wraps in gloss/matt and carbon in the past).
Thanks

haha tell me about it, ouch!!, I think it would be a lovely effect to have though!!

To be honest, you only really notice it up close. Otherwise it looks like a matt wrap.

thats interesting to know, my other alternative was metallic matt grey which is a LOT cheaper! Perhaps i’ll order a metre and see how it looks! Is it thicker than the matt/gloss?

used the black brushed on an audi a5 cab, it is very expensive, I found that the material adhesive seemed to be alot more aggressive compared to the other colours in the 3m 1080 series.
It has a real nice finish to it, from far looks satin black but when u get closer u can see the texture

also just to add, be careful in heating and streching has it discolors

yes seen the Arlon version, actually looks pretty good, will be trying the arlon material next time

Hi,
I’ve just started using the Brushed Black in the 1080 on a RX8 i bought last month. The material looks amazing. Especially at night. I would defiantly recommend it.
There are bad points however. It does not like the heat at all. Any stretching will be visible. Maybe not in daylight but under the workshop lights there were lines where we had applied heat and squeegeed. Saying that though we applied the roof and most of the bonnet without a heat gun.
The vinyl is also very thin, almost transparent when held up to the light, so beware of ripping.
As said in a previous post the glue seams more aggressive than other 1080 vinyls I have used.
I was 240 for 5m. I’m intended to do a full wrap with the Brushed black and the rear suicide doors in Gloss black Metallic ( poor mans R8), but being on a humble sign makers wage I decided to do it in stages. Now i see it like this though i quite like it. I’d be interested to hear your opinions.
