After 12 months of exposure to wind, weather and sea-spray the graphic images that wrap the reception building and walkways for Weymouth’s Sea Life Tower have proven their durability and continue to present a striking effect. When a new attraction for Weymouth was required to add interest to the town, Merlin Entertainments, which also owns Weymouth Sea Life Park, came up with the innovative idea of a 174ft. high rotating observational tower, giving panoramic views across the town, bay and beyond, and which could also be seen from all points around the bay.

Swift Signs was awarded the contract to supply and install the graphic wrap and selected William Smith to provide a suitable and extremely durable media. “We wanted a really high quality and durable print, so asked William Smith to supply this for us bearing in mind the location, the time of year we would be applying the graphics and the requirement to apply to a difficult structure,” explains Swift Signs Partner, Karl Lantree. “The technical advice from a great team at William Smith and samples supplied made the process and product selection very easy.”

It was essential that the selected material would withstand wind and weather at the sea’s edge and would handle well in Winter weather conditions as installation would take place during March. Although not built specifically for the London Olympics it was planned to be ready prior to the start of the games. William Smith recommended Arlon DPF 8000, which was then sampled and approved by the project architects.

“It’s a fantastic product and has become one of our mainstays,” says Karl Lantree. “For this project the weather was our guiding factor and DPF 8000 has a nice threshold for application; even though the adhesive is quite aggressive, it’s not too temperature critical. It’s a testimony to the product that it was applied in very harsh conditions and one year on is still working very well.” Approximately 1Km of Arlon DPF 8000 was used to create the graphics which completely wrap the exterior of the reception building and walkways leading the tower. “The results are stunning and, as a consequence, we have been awarded other contracts using the same materials,” concludes Mr. Lantree.

Arlon DPF 8000 is a satin white high-tensile polyvinyl chloride film, with an extra strong permanent pressure-sensitive adhesive that offers an ideal solution for indoor and outdoor graphics on ‘hard-to-stick’ and low energy surfaces. It conforms well to flat and slightly contoured surfaces on substrates such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polyurethane. It can be applied in cold temperature environments and comes with an outdoor durability of up to seven years. DPF 8000 is also designed to meet the marking requirements and specifications of the transportation, vending and automotive industries

Arlon DPF 8000 is available ex-stock from William Smith and next day delivery is available on orders received before 6pm.
