  • Window Frosting – Stripes – Brand & Application Process

    Hello All,

    Hope all is well.

Would really appreciate some feed back on experiences on method of application for window frosting with various sizing of stripes up from 50mm to 150mm .

    Question :

    1) What production /application method did you apply to have consistent levels of stripes.

    2) Is dry application + App tape the only method to get accurate and straight spacing of stripes?

    3) If APP tapes is to be used what type do you recommend that will tunnel or ripple?

    4) If dry method of application is prefered i was considering metscape (metamark) frosting. Has anyone used this and is it forgiving enough for this type of installation.

I have a few windows to do, each window is around 3m long and i have always used the wet application method for just flat frosting , no cuts or striping etc.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Pj

if you are doing 50mm – 150mm dots or square do it dry and use standard app tape. You can buy pre-spaced dots on a roll if you have many to do.

Use a laser level or just measure every now and again

metscape works well for this type of installation

dry is fine, metscape will do the job nicely. If there are multiple stripes best to pre space and app tape
The enclosed is all cut and applied in one

Pre-spaced as suggested. easily done in the right width of vinyl cutter.

DRY DRY DRY, no matter what size i am fitting.

if you cannot fit dry, go for an air-escape adhesive system etc vinyl. most good brands offer this option now.

    Hi Chris,

my project is very similar in design , having such a large area with app tape , did you experience any tunneling or ripples with the app tape ? Is this an issue with dry application on large area s ?

Also did you hand app the tape or machine apply ?
Can you recommend the brand of app tape you use ?

I use r-tape clear app tape on most of my vinyl cut signs but tends to ripple and tunnel on larger type signs .

have to say I apply apptape by hand and never have a problem. I do have rollers to support the app tape and help apply it. Any app tape should do, I use oracle medium tack and low tack.

Just noticed you are using clear tape, use the paper one and you will have no problem at all

    Where are you based?

Always apply dry and have never had a problem. Window prep is key. Laser line level is handy as long as the windows are level too!! (Been caught out there) . I lay up the complete sheet and tape off, ensuring the whole sheet lies flat and runs true. I then peel back about 1/3 of the width and apply. This now acts as an anchor point and as long as you apply the remainder without stressing, pulling or twisting, it should lie naturally onto the glass back in the position it was initially taped. The worst run-out I had doing this was about 5mm over 2m…….
