    Hi Derek,

I would look at getting a webite made in wordpress it restricts you to a certain degree but allows you to change text photos etc without to much fuss.

I got mine done but i use it as a shop and can input product etc they basically work on a dashboard and you can get plug in’s a bit like apps for you phone.

Derek most good web design companies will give you a back end were you can alter pages add pictures etc pretty much as standard. I have a local guy who is pretty good if you want his details. If you want send me a pm and i will forward them.

This is my building website (sign one has been on the very long finger!!!) And i can pretty much change every bit of it except he main layout. (We dont update it regularly enough so pass no remarks on the limited content)

http://www.sitewizard.co.uk/ for me Derek. Once built, you can do all the updating yourself.

I’d second the vote for wordpress, very easy to use once you have the basics laid out.

If you want a hand to set it up and get the base down for you to start playing with then drop me an e-mail and ill help you with it. Failing that I work with a company who do all my designing and customer sites so I can assist in getting a quote to have it done for you if you would rather.

I used to use people all the time for sites but got sick of waiting every time I wanted something changed now I pay to have the base site done in wordpress and any tweaks or changes I can do myself from then on, works very nice.

Vote for WordPress.org – being used more & more due to the ease of updating and its free!
You can use standard ‘theme’ or even buy/feebies ready made themes to suit the look your after.

If you use WordPress, make sure your webhost package is Linux based, your save a lot of headaches setting it all up!

Wordpress is an ideal platform for those of us that want to get on with updating content fast without having to know any html language and Google likes blogs so your site will get found and indexed fast, though a blog does need to be updated regularly to stay indexed.

It depends on what your wanting to do harry, is it just blogging or do you have a shop.

You tube is always a great resource for that type of thing as you can see someone doing it 😀

Downloaded all the stuff and had a go Graeme, but gave up. Got sold on the idea that anybody could do it, but didn’t reckon on how much time was involved,

Yeah there is a fair bit of work getting it set up but once it’s up it easy to maintain.

Most hosts give you the option to use wordpress in there control panel

and there are load of free templates that you can use and fill with your own content.

I think that might be an option, what I tried to do was build a finished site first, you reckon installing and tweaking is a better option?

Yeah i be looking to get it installed on the server then tweak it. if you don’t do it on the server when you go to upload it all the links will be pointing to the wrong place giving you an even bigger headache.

I must admit i’m all for getting a free template that’s the way i did it then you install the plugins that you need tweak it as you feel necessary. i’m using the e commerce plug in and finding it fairly easy to use.

    my template is called mazine

On WordPress I’d advise buying one of the professional templates… but, as much as wordpress is alright if you want hassle-free updatability etc, it takes time to properly populate it and get away from it looking like an empty (under constriction) shell.

I’m a web guy, to be honest, so my opinions here might be a bit skewed. I decided about 2 years ago to thoroughly investigate the usefulness of wordpress. I bought a professional template/them, installed it, spent literally weeks working to get to know my way around (both on the theme and wordpress). I eventually got it looking and fuctioning the way I wanted it and at the time described it as possibly the best website the world has ever seen…

Anyway, all of a sudden I had problems — vulnerabilities in some script somewhere. After about 5 reinstalls, fixing things up, etc, etc, I decided to dump it. People visiting my website were getting viruses and everything. I’m pretty competent with these technologies and I couldn’t get rid of this problem… I exchanged countless emails with experts all over the world, including the guys that sold me the theme, to no avail.

I can honestly say that was a terrible few weeks and as much as I might use wordpress for some things, it isn’t something I would want to go through again with my main source of income website.

Another problem I had with wordpress was it’s limitations in terms of being able to optimise for Google, but that’s another story…

If I was advising someone on the way to go, and they had the money, I would probably recommend spending 2 or 3 grand to get a proper bespoke CMS solution..

Jeez. I’m speechless. There’s a first. Brilliant though that, in a way… My face changes colour like that when the customer comes over to see how I’m getting on with his new sign.

But where the hell do you find things like that’s the web? I never find stuff like that.
