  • Advice needed Bonding 3mm foamex?

Hi newbie here, what is the best way to bond 3mm foamex to a plywood backing. The foamex sign is 2ft by 8ft

I’m wondering what would be the best type of adhesive? I’d prefer not to use mechanical fixings, I have though of stuff like stixall or grip fill

    Regards Richard

hi richard, maybe you could explain more why you need to do this?? and not use a thicker substrate that supports its self instead of sticking 3mm foamex to ply wood.john 🙂

don’t bond it, use a frame of some sort.

on ply wood you would need to use L-Shape aluminium angle to create a picture frame and hold the foamex to the wood.
you will need to create some form of space around the frame also to allow a little movement and for the foamex to expand and contract.

or use a panatrim frame type system to hold it.

buy some aluminium composite, even hoarding board if price is a big issue, it will stand a far better chance than 3mm foamex.

sorry to be blunt but 3mm foamex should not be used for exterior signage other than perhaps temporary.

As John and as Rob says for expansion etc., but I’d be wary of even using 3mm with framing outside as it’s so thin, if the sun heats it up it’ll possibly bulge/belly in the middle at that size.
